Skaife announces retirement

Whether you stand on the blue or the red side of the line, there is no argument that Mark Skaife is one of the true legends of the V8 Supercar track and today he will call an end to his illustrious career. After more than 20 years in the racing suit Skaife will today announce at a Melbourne press conference that this will be his last season behind the wheel of his HRT Commodore.

After recording some disappointing results this season, the five-time Bathurst champion has been fighting off speculation of a retirement for a good part of the year. His official announcement of hanging up the boots may see young gun Will Davison make the trek over from Ford to fill the Skaife void next season but Davidson hasn’t confirmed anything yet. Retirement talk stepped up after Skaife crashed out of contention at his favourite circuit, Bathurst, and later admitted driver fault.

Pontiac to drop VE-based G8 range?

Holden’s largest export market could potentially dry up with inside sources reporting that Pontiac will not carry over to the next-generation rear-drive platform of the Australian-developed Commodore.

Pontiac to drop VE-based G8 range?

Pontiac could discontinue its entire VE-based G8 range when the next Commodore arrives in about five years time, citing limited corporate resources and fear of rising fuel-economy standards as the main motives.

2009 Holden VE & WM specification changes

All Holden VE & WM models (dubbed MY9.5) ordered from today will see a slight specification change with Berlina losing the optional V8 engine. It will now be offered, along with all Omega models, exclusively with a 175kW variant of the 3.6 litre Alloytec V6 coupled to a four-speed automatic. SV6, Calais, Calais-V, Statesman and Caprice models featuring the V6 will be afforded the 195kW version.

The Dual-Fuel variant of the Alloytec V6 engine will also receive some minor fuel economy improvements in the near future and V8 models pick up Active Fuel Management (or cylinder deactivation) - more on this in coming weeks.

Hat Trick for Ford at Bathurst

888_011.jpgIt was three in a row for Ford and a case of history repeating itself for Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes who come from fifth on the grid to take out this year’s Bathurst 1000.

The result recalled memories of Lowndes’ friend and mentor the late Peter Brock taking triple victories in the ’70s and ’80s, but was said to me even more impressive in this era of tougher more competitive racing.

Cadillac Sportwagon’s supercharged V8 a possibility

In news that we didn’t really want to hear, Cadillac’s new CTS Sportwagon is said to be considered for a supercharged version of the LSA 6.2-litre V8. That’s around 415kW, and apparently an easy transition from the Caddy CTS-V to the wagon.

Now, it’s not because we didn’t want to know about it. We always want to know about these sort of things. No, it’s that the CarAdvice office is now depressed because the Americans get something we’d very much like over here. Think E63 AMG Avant, or RS6 Avant, and you’ll get the picture.

HSV W427 goes 270km/h

“Crickey, that thing is so wicked, it ought to be illegal,” the first words uttered by an excited Kiwi V8 Supercar driver Greg Murphy after stepping from his first few minutes in Holden Special Vehicles range topping W427 sports sedan.

Let’s be plain from the beginning, ‘Murph’ has spent more than a few minutes going very, very fast in all manner of cars, not just his regular V8 Supercar ride.

- David Twomey

Whatismore, it was palpably plain from the excitement on his face as he burst into The Chalet at GM Holden’s Proving Ground complex at Lang Lang outside Melbourne that he had had more fun than normally is the case, at least sitting down!

With much of its development carried out here in Australia by Holden engineers, naturally then it is powered by an LS3 V8 engine which also features in the local HSV line-up.

Peculiarly however, it seems for the moment this is as far as the touring line-up will progress, with no official mention of a Senator based model as previously speculated.
