Jaguar XFR and XF Diesel S – First Steer

Let’s deal with those nasty, out of date rumour mills before we move onto the really good stuff concerning these two new Jaguar XF variants.

xfr-1
Super smooth, super quiet and wickedly quick, Jaguar has pulled ahead of the German brands with these new XF cars.

When you stop to consider the 370Z’s price tag then what I’m about to say will begin to make a whole lot more sense: this is the best sports car on the market under $100K.

When a luxury car costs north of $1 million, you tend to expect a lot from it.

You expect it to be finished perfectly, you expect it to be smooth as silk, you expect it to cosset and comfort its passengers, and you expect it to have all the bells and whistles available.

If Shrek were to own a car, it would surely be the Kia Soul. Just like the loveable green ogre, the ill-proportioned stature and unique personality of the Soul is strangely appealing.

And if you’re looking for a dose of youthful fervour, without going under the knife, this latest addition to the Korean carmaker’s budding line-up of affordable cars might be the answer. If you ask me, it’s better than botox.

If I didn’t get moving in a few minutes, I was a certainty to miss my flight and that wouldn’t be a good thing if I liked the idea of continued employment with CarAdvice.

But my self-inflicted tardiness was about to get a whole lot more critical, when I switched on the ignition and saw the fuel warning light beaming back at me. That’s the moment when a sense of doom overcomes you and nausea kicks in just for the hell of it.

2009 Hyundai Santa Fe CRDi Long Term Review update

Well it’s been four weeks instead of the usual three, what with the whole Full Throttle trip and all, but the Santa Fe hasn’t been locked up in a garage, with a forlorn look across its grille.

No, the good wife has been getting some use out of the car, while carting the offspring from swimming lessons to playcentres.

Hankook Enfren Low Rolling Resistance Tyre Launch

Would a day at the race track disprove my thoughts on LRR tyres?

-by Matt Brogan

Low Rolling Resistance tyres may sound like an oxymoron, and quite often the assumption made is that an LRR tyre will not perform as well as a conventional steel belted radial in terms of grip, stopping performance and cornering capability.

So when Hankook released its latest Enfren range of LRR (Low Rolling Resistance) tyres yesterday it seemed logical that the best place to disprove that theory was obvious – Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway.

“More power, more efficient and even greener, the third generation Prius has definitely got our attention”

Call me ignorant or uninformed but I’ve never heard of a five-seat production car with a co-efficient of drag as low as 0.25.

Mazda doesn’t like Americans. Well, that may not be strictly true, especially with the CX-9 running around. But with the MX-5, the Americans were basically shut out of the design phase. I like Mazda for that. But how do we know? Just look at the size of this car.

2009 Renault Laguna Estate – First Steer

2009 Renault Laguna Estate – First Steer

- by Matt Brogan

Renault first launched the Laguna in 1994, though it wasn’t until 2002 that we saw the nameplate in Australia.

It’s been a popular car for the French brand globally selling some 2.3 million examples in the past 15 years. Though here down-under, sales have been, well… a little slow.

So will the launch of an Estate – or wagon – variant improve sales for the Laguna model? Or maybe it will be the introduction of a petrol variant to the range that will finally see Renault win some sales from the brand’s jaggernaut competitor Passat?

If yesterday’s drive is anything to go by then the answer is indeed a complex one.

It’s hard to believe the Golf was in need of an update. Already such a terrific little car with contemporary style, it hardly felt old.

After driving the latest version of Germany’s favourite mid-sized hatch this week, I think it’s fair to say that the all-new Golf is not only better than its predecessor, but that it also hits the competition for six.
