2009 Isuzu D-MAX - First Steer

A third of the way between Brisbane and the Gold Coast exists a place called Sirromet Winery, one of QLD’s better known producers of fine wine, and a careful play on words of the name of the owner, one T. E. Morris!

What an excellent location to launch a new brand and model into the Australian market.

2008 Dodge Journey First Steer

Some wag had to say it on the media launch for the all-new Dodge Journey crossover and they did - “it’s not so much the destination as the Journey that counts”.

They weren’t far wrong either as the Journey will really count for the Dodge brand in Australia as it has the potential to become the US brand’s top selling vehicle in Australia.

After a bit of a bumpy plane flight into Albury, we arrived to a gorgeous sunny day (quite surprising when you consider the weather we have been having of late!).

Waiting for us at the airport was a fleet of Skoda’s latest model, the Octavia Scout. Based on the Octavia Wagon, the Scout receives a number of enhanced features, including a four-wheel drive system, along with 180mm worth of ground clearance.

It’s not very often that I am willing to get up at  6:00am to go for a drive, in fact it’s not often that I am willing to get up at 6:00am for anything. But Suzuki’s invitation to central and northern Australia to drive the new Grand Vitara was an offer worth waking up early for.

Our journey took three days and involved everything from private jets at a cost of $4000 an hour to helicopters, a camel (more on the dromedary later) and of course, driving Suzuki’s flagship model across hundreds of kilometres of desert and four-wheel drive tracks in the Northern Territory.

2008 Peugeot Partner and Expert LCVs

French carmaker Peugeot’s entry into the booming Australian Light Commercial Vehicle market could be seen as opportunistic, but it is certainly a case of better late than never.

-David Twomey

Peugeot has hit the LCV market, which has been one of the sales standouts of the Australian automotive market in recent years, with a couple of well placed, if oddly named, debutantes in the Expert and the Partner.

While it shares the familiar look of the 308 Hatch up front, it’s all change at the rear, thanks to a distinctive window profile and longer bodywork.

Since its launch back in 2005 the Spanish-built Navara Dual Cab has been the only weapon in Nissan’s armoury in the strong light truck, or utility, market.

2008 Nissan X-Trail diesel – First Steer

Nissan considers it a bold move, some might consider it foolhardy given the escalation in the price of diesel fuel, but the addition of a willing 2.0-litre diesel engine to the Nissan X-Trail compact SUV is mostly just a good thing.

The X-Trail is a strong part of Nissan’s sales success, accounting for nearly 12,500 sales last year, and currently posting about 800 sales a month for the company.
