Drivers fined for saving shovelled out parking spaces

Although it’s the middle of summer here in Australia, try to picture this situation and sympathise with the people of Darby Township in the US.

Your car is parked outside your house and stuck deep in the snow. When the weather clears, you head out spend the best part of an hour shovelling it free so you can drive to the supermarket to do a quick shop. You won’t be gone for much longer than an hour, and decide to put a deck chair in the space to save it. No point letting all that hard work go to waste, is there?

That’s not the way the decision makers see it, however.

Officials in Darby Township, Delaware County, Philadelphia, last week passed a law banning motorists from saving parking spaces after clearing the snow from them.

Those found guilty of the offence face a fine of up to $300. Under the law, it is also illegal to shovel the snow back into the space after you have cleared it, or after it has been plowed.

Darby Township officials say they are simply enforcing a section of the state motor vehicle code that disallows obstructing roads.
