yaaaawn… just what the world needs… another overprice VW thats just a poor cousin to its Audi stablemates.
And whats with the dude in the top pic? Did he forget a little something today?… clothes perhaps.
should it be the R35?
Well, I reckon the R36 will be pretty good. Finding an Audi Avant that matches the power and specs of the R36 Passat Variant will be a very difficult find.
Only thing is the aluminum dash from the show car (07) was pretty fugly, I hope that hasn’t made it to production. Eek!
Dlr1 you obviously know nothing about cars.
Mitch, its a R36 due to the 3.6l engine.
Liam you know much more about cars. Rock on!
Looking forward to the Women of the show post.
The two blondes, one in white and one in blue on the right both need better inspection…
Can’t wait to get behind the wheel of one of these.
I’ve always been a fan of the Passat, and this looks awesome.
now wouldn’t the R32 benefit nicely from a 3.6 transplant. would have to be called R32+4 !?
laim, you obviously know nothing about reading because the article says 3.5L
Mitch, before posting rubbish – try this, go to http://www.google.com.au, type in Passat R36 Specification, and read the many articles that say it’s a 3.6 litre engine.
This article has a typo, understandable since the author is busy watching the chics at the show and not concentrating :)
Nice, 3.6 litres, 220kw 0-100km in 5.6 sec and all with AWD, gee what are Ford and Holden doing? takes 6 0dd litres to produce a time like that.
What is the price DlR1?
Too much Golfie.
Nice though innit.
220Kw 0-100 in 6.5’s through the front wheels. Aren’t these the sort of figure BFII is disputing could ever happen through a front wheel drive? Even though it sya it in B&W he’ll say its witchcraft and the boffins are tellin fibs.
Who is this fool saying yawn. Another ignorant goose. Why on earth would you want to pay over $100K for an Audi that couldn’t do these times when you can get the R36 for less than $65K.
You’re either a certified clown or have more money than sense!
Gents,
Over priced VW??? You are kidding aren’t you. 65k is pretty good going given that it will take over 100k to find anything in the audi stable to do these figures.
Only gripe is the bright blue? Anyone seen one in another colour?
Why, thenk yew. 65 grand it is. This much stonk and class seems more than reasonable for 65 large.
looks good…. especially the price.
Yeah Audi, as much as I love them… the cars worth getting the S and RS with “similar” specs and performance are all 120~160K….
VW needs a more “race” inspired badge thats all…. the RS badges adds prestige haha.
Nah but seriously, I know they cater to the more subtle fans, but a more distinct badge and/or race-inspired color/wheel shade would do them HUGE amounts of good.
ive seen a black one….. looks great!
I think this will be a great seller, VW doesnt get enough credit!
“220Kw 0-100 in 6.5’s through the front wheels. Aren’t these the sort of figure BFII is disputing could ever happen through a front wheel drive?”
It’s all wheel drive and 5.6 seconds.
The R36 has 4motion … doesn’t it? 65K is a very tidy price, that’s right on S3 money.
Mk6 Golf should see the debut of the 3.6 VR6 with any luck.
Hope they have fixed all the problems i had with the old one, still current shape, i have a 2006 passat 3.2 all wheel drive, have had the front struts replaced twice, after much complaining they finally agreed there was a problem, then about 3 months after that the steering completly failed, could drive in a straight line but could not steer, electric over hyd, they had to send a tilt tray to collect it, and would not give me a loan car because it happened in front of my house, and not 100km from home, mind you it went 180km to the closest dealership. Was thinking of a new one, but there service is crap.
I have an R36 wagon on order – it is white. The colour range is pretty poor – go fast R blue, black, silver or white. I reckon white is the new black anyway. This talk of $65k is not true. With a couple of extras, my car will be $80k – the same as I’d pay for a 4 year old 530i – I am buying the R36 because it is fast, not too over the top, well made and equipped and has room for my family. Alternatives? Nil. PS – want to buy a nice ‘06 GTI?
Stephen which extras did you go for? I’ve got a GTI as well and am looking for get something bigger for my family yet still quick and the passat r36 seems the way to go for now. Do you guys think its worth waiting for the passat cc?
could try a subaru forester xt. well under $50K. bigger internally than an r36. have read differing articles but 0-100 should be 5.6 secs. My 2005 model with a small tweak does 0-100 in 5.2 secs. I will be test driving both with great interest.
Stephen, you’re on the money, $65k is rubbish. I have an R36 sedan on order and it’s $79600 drive away. The $65K has no govt or dealer delivery charges, and as for extras I’ve added a sunroof, satnav and the Dyn Audio package. Let’s me also add the fact that you’ll pay around $3,500 in Luxury Car Tax!
Michael, a Suburu Forester is not a German engineered automobile, it’s a Japanese Tin Can.
this is another relatively high performance car that would be P-Plate legal in Victoria under the new legislation.
if you shop well you can get one for $63k drive away in NSW, if you are paying $80k you are setting yourself up for massive depreciation. try a car buying service, or get fleet pricing. it is after all just a VW, the peoples car ;-)
I know this because i have seen the order.
I got quoated 63K drive away after cooperate discount. Does anyone know if its comes with bluetooth option?
Gday AJ,
The price 63K driveaway is for a Wagon? And if so what options ?
i transport the r36’s off the warfs,i test thrash all sorts, THEY GO!!!!!!!!
I get mine in the last week of June and you can get them for a heap less than the figures quoted here and better still you can get them on the VW Corporate Plus programme!
BB, I really want to get a 36 wagon but in Perth they want big money, no discounts etc, can you tell me were you got your from and for hoe much with what options etc. for $63K i would buy now.
Anyone seen a review of the R36?? If so could you you please let me know where it is (google doesnt have much in the way of actual reviews).
Thanks.
PS – Nice wheels. mid 60’s, AWD, 5 1/2 seconds to 100… What more do we need. (perhaps a little badge value)
Test drove the R36 wagon today in blue. Goes like stink, sounds very nice without being too loud, sits flat in corners yet has a comfortable ride, feels “chuckable” and agile. DSG gearbox is again a gem and with the paddles on the steering wheel are a lot of fun. Gear changes in drive are quick and smooth. Interior nice, size is great for two adults and two teens, luggage area huge. Details are all there such as bi-xenon swivelling headlights, heated seats front and rear. Much, much better than the standard 3.2l Passat. Also much nicer than my 530i BMW and on road price as is $73k. Apart from the badge, this kills anything of this size from BMW, Merc or Audi.
Just drove my R36 home today – paid less than $62k and worth every penny – does everything it should do with German engineered refinement… you can keep your Audi and BMW’s at 150 to 200% of the cost with little additional benefit (bar snob factor).
I can’t wait for Clarkson to get hold of it – I’ll eat my shorts if he gives it a bad review!
AJ – I have ordered the car with electric tailgate ($750), Satnav ($3k), sunroof $2k) – total is around $80k with dealer delivery and Vic taxes; depreciation – yeah, I know, but I don’t buy cars to make money! I drove a test car last week, and it flies! Feels big, torquey and planted. I don’t care about the money side – it is better than paying $120k+ for a 530i (which admittedly would be the better car all up); I don’t have $120k so $80 it is! And I wonder whether there would be so much interest in the 530i – the R36 is generating some pretty cool interest ‘under the radar’, which is how I like it.
Repeating “German Snob”s request: Has anyone read a real review of this car? I have a chipped Golf GTi, but with two kids now was looking for something with as much go but bigger. An R36 sedan seems to fit the bill. I personally think the $65k price is a bargain given what you get as standard.
Going to have my black R36 in 10 days. Can’t find any car in this spec., luxurious and spacious in this price. It’s about HK$600k in Hong Kong( fully loaded).
R36 is the best buy in Australia, or you should say Australia is the best place to buy R36. Please check the price of R36 and Audi S5 in UK, they are only about 20% different(GBP32,150 and GBP39,825) but in Australia, it’s a double(AU$66,900 and AU$131,900)
Just ordered a black r36 sedan. 59k on the road with no options.. bargain
Automotive salivation! I took the “sensible” approach of the 125kw TDI. Mostly because of its efficiency, partly because I couldn’t afford an R36! I love my TDI very much but this machine would be buckets of fun and practical to boot. I was actually thinking it would lure some buyers away from the TRD Aurion. Similar price, better performance (and pretty much everything else!).
Nice wheels VW.
Well I have a R36 which is one month old and even with a few optinions it came in under 65k drive away. You just got to ask for it since it is hard times. On the other note the car is very nice to drive and you will be hard pushed to find a Family car sedan with these spec for 65k unless of coarse you buy something cheap and trick it up.It is said that the DSG gearbox is the most advanced Gearbox in the world and I have to admit that it is very smooth and advanced. This is causing me(the Dealer) a problem since it is playing up.It keeps loosing drive intermittend and one has to play with the gear selector to find a gear again and in most cases it happens when it is in D6.Does anybody have or has heard of similar issues with the DSG gearbox?
I just bought one of these – and I love it. Best valued german sports available today. We have an 1996 Audi A4 1.8t as well my friend has a a 2007 bmw 3series and the r36 rocks.
I now love VW and I love this car…….Until you’ve been in one and driven one you will never know just how amazing this car is – truly a joy to drive
