2012 Hyundai Grandeur unveiled in Korea

By Brett Davis |

Hyundai has just released the all-new 2011 Hyundai Grandeur in its local market. The model will also be sold in various international markets in 2012 as well, but as our previous report mentioned, Australia will not be one of those international markets.

The new model will be both larger and more powerful than its predecessor, featuring the Lambda II 3.0-litre GDI direct injection engine outputting 199kW of power and 310Nm of torque.

It will feature loads of creature comforts such as mood blue and white interior lighting, a central eight-inch LCD touchscreen interface incorporating satellite navigation and a multimedia entertainment system.

Other class-following features include an intelligent cruise control system called Advanced Smart Cruise Control which can monitor the road and traffic ahead. This system is able to stop the vehicle if another vehicle ahead makes a sudden stop by using various onboard sensors. The system is then able to regain to set speed.

The car does show promise and could sell quite well if sold in America, and even in Australia if it were to be launched sometime in the future.

We’ll keep you updated if any plans do arise.

  • Deco

    Does look nice.

    • sheghd

lalalalala australians you cant buy !!!!!! ahahhaahha

  • Duckula

I quite like it from the pics…. *Shrugs*

  • Goodfa

It looks a generation ahead of the Falcon and Commodore.

Lucky for Ford & Holden it is not coming here.

In the past I would have never considered a Kia or Hyundai but with their latest offerings they are becoming desirable cars.

    • Ima Hogg

I agree 100%. Years ago if somebody told me they liked the look of a Hyundai or Kia I would have laughed at them. These days they are both producing some of the best looking cars on the road.

Same with reliability, who remembers the old excel and the Kia Carnivall. Hyundai are at the moment are as reliable as most Japanese car makers, kia also are doing well but i’m not quite sure about Kia but I do know they are farely reliable these days.

    • Hung Low

The I45 is also a better finished car than the locals, but it has not made a dent against their sales.
Even if this did come here, it would not compete against the locals, instead it will be pinned against the Accord, Maxima and the barely existent Skoda Superb!

      • Al Juraj

Most people here have to be educated about proper engineering, good quality, and the Commodore’s true nationality. Until this happens, they will keep buying whatever they believe in.

        • MF

or maybe AUS just love American too much.

    • Naughtyius Maximus

Only a generation ahead of the Falcon and Commodore – your too light on there! It is 2x generations ahead of the Falcon and Commodore as a minimum!!!

  • John

that definitely looks nice and looks like it has alot of luxury features aswell
would love this to come to australia

    • Joker

The Features it has are almost Identical to the Mondeo XR5. (app art from the panoramic sunroof which is hawt)
Good to see it filtering into other makes :)

      • John

no it also has cameras around the car, which you would be lucky to see in some lexus models

        • Joker

Ok, Camera’s the Mondeo doesn’t have.

          But it does have

          -Auto Dimming Mirror
          -Adaptive Cruise
          -Rain Sensing Wipers
          -Auto Headlights
          -Adaptive Headlights
          -Heated Seats
          -Front and Rear Parking Sensors
          -Voice Activation
          -Bluetooth Connectivity
          -Ipod Connectivity
          -8 Speaker/6 Stack CD/Mp3 Sony Sound System.

          for 40k AUD

It’s had those features since 2009 and all except adaptive lights and cruise since 2008.

          • John

atleast that shows hyundai are coming up to par in features and quality of other car makers

  • Critic

Amazing car, this car actually looks good from all the angles. Very very good interior too. Can’t wait to test drive it here.

  • Hendrik

That was the strangest (and worst) marketing video ive ever seen.

    • likeseriously

      yes jimmy

    • Rodders

yes agreed, I nearly Expected Meatloaf to be singing in the Background… :)
“You took the words right outa my Mouth…” LOL

  • Pamela_Anderson

This is a great looking car. But I don’t believe it would sell very well in Aus, especially considering the i45′s lackluster sales here..

    • bangel

Will no doubt have crappy handling as aimed at the yankee market which prefers wallowy mashmallow handling ,speed steering with no weight .

Aussies prefer euro tight suspension .

  • Octavian

A nice typically conservative and slightly romantic Korean ad, I’m surprised that the Korean company wasn’t as patriotic to use Samsung gadgets instead of Apple’s, maybe it’s because Apple’s look more luxurious to promote Hyundai’s new luxury.

It’s amazing how far the company has come, it’s now almost rivalling Honda’s level luxury.

    • likeseriously

its coz the equus comes with an ipad probably,

even if the hyundais came with a samsung galaxy tab,
hmmm…because its a korean car and korean samsung galaxy tab…they probably wanna make it a little more (white), etc.

  • Des

Hyundai, if you bring it here don’t call it a Grandeur, it suggests its related to the wallowing slugs that were previous models. Call it the Azera, as its known in other markets. It sounds a bit more sporting and doesn’t carry Grandeur baggage.

    • likeseriously

would probably be called the i55 if it did came out,

as there are heaps of other models in hyundais future lineup, such as the ix55, ix25, i35 and the list goes on

  • anthony

“Will no doubt have crappy handling as aimed at the yankee market which prefers wallowy mashmallow handling ,speed steering with no weight ”

have you been/lived in america? i lived there for two years and owned several american cars there. people in america are much like here in australia.. lots of different tastes in cars and such. a lot of americans like small euro sports cars” remember that a HELL of a lot more are sold there than here”.

getting a little tired of american bashing. it really makes australia look as redneck as….as…well.. america

on another note. this car looks great :)

    • bangel

The majority of yanks would not know what handling was , a few educated and well travelled would , they would have no interest in this car .

      • anthony

back to the car. the market and demand for interesting cars is massive in america. hense why cars like this will make it to their shores and not ours. with our dull, take what ever we get attitude here we have very little. usually we get watered down versions if at all of good international cars and are stuck to contend with the duopoly of australian cars here. that whole ford or holden person has got to show how backwards we are as a nation, that when companys like this can produce a car like that and we still see big basic 4 door sedans as the pride and joy.

mind you having a kajillion percent tax and upmark on imported cars dosnt help. maybe thats why ford/holden produce yesteryear cars for us here. i often….i sometimes when people knew of them. heard americans say how they would like the falcon there, or commodore “in holden guise”…..basicaly for a novilty reason. because it would be different.

enough rant anyway.. nice car this be :P

Known as the Azera in the USit is essentially an enlarged Sonata with v-6 vs 4 for the Sonata. If they make a hybrid version using the Sonata hybrid system they will have a real winner. I would anticipate highway cruising fuel economy in the 50 mpg range depending on the gas engine choice 9 (or diesel) choice they offer,

  • Steve-Poyza

This car does looks great, I want it on Aussie shores because I’d love for Hyundai’s entire line-up to be updated so that buyers can walk into their showrooms and be thoroughly impressed. Bet you’d never be able to do that with Holden, because the Commodore is their only good car (okay, the Cruze is somewhat acceptable). So they really should update the Elantra, Grandeur and Santa Fe in their local line-up. The only car that really confuses me is the Getz. It hasn’t been replaced because it is a strong seller, fair enough. What I don’t get is what will replace it eventually… Is the i20 the actual successor, or is it the i10? Isn’t the i10 a midget?

By the way, this promotional video was incredibly emotional. Why? It confused me a bit. Also, the (Chevrolet) Cruze’s indicator was going somewhat crazy…

    • likeseriously

      yea

i think though they need to upgrade their showrooms interior and exterior, like kia’s glass house showroom in sydney, parramatta road, it’s huuuge…luxurious…

  • MattW

I dont know where this fits in the range regarding the i45, but it looks thats little restrained from the i45, I really like it. The video though… supposed to be promoting the car or documenting some shy guy’s date?

    • Sumpguard

Great car and if the sales people all looked like her then yes it would sell here too :) She ain’t his date Matt. Watch the ad again. He enters the car and is overwhelmed so much that he forgets to let the hot sales lady in the other side.

Give it a few years and the Grandeur will be back on the Aussie menu.

  • Gan Tan

I reckon the girl in the ad is a half caste….. nice :)

  • Shak

To a couple of these comments about it being two generations ahead of our locals, i fully agree. However, it is only so in terms of engineering and kit. If you were to blast down a deserted mountain road in a Falcon or Commodore, you would be having much more fun in than in the grandeur. While it may be a large car, and a brilliant one at that, it is on of those large cars that puts equipment, looks and engineering ahead of all else. It is more of a competitor for the Accords, Maximas and Supers, rather than a Falcon or Commodore. And that is the reason it will succeed in the US.

  • Michael

    I am jealous Hyundai…JEALOUS!

  • Dennis

Just wait for the Kia version, it will be better looking

    • ST

I’ve seen them driving around Sydney already without covers. Everything looks nice but the wheels (easily fixed anyway)

  • Henry

THEY CANT SELL IT HERE!!!!!!! IS HYUNDAI NUTS Ive loved them since they came to Australia in 1999 and i am turning 14 this year i used to go in them at the showroom and i loved the leather!!!!! BUT THEM NOT SELLING I HATE HYUNDAI FOR THAT. They have already taken one of my favorites away(The Tiburon) And Now this importing is a no go zone at the moment its a great car and i do like the model at the moment even though its not the best in every way DAMMMMMMMMMMMM :( ohh well, that one looks nice by the way

    • JHP

tiburon was an utter piece of turd, so glad that its gone, and don’t be sad, because we are getting much better, faster, nimbler hyundai genesis coupe soon

  • Dylan

    WHY won’t unveil in AUS????????????

    • Whoever it is

By the time it landed to the showroom…may be it would cost $70000 for the fully loaded version…ask yourself if you got $70000 or a several years old european car to trade in plus cash adjustment…will you go to Hyundai showroom? May be but chance is small.
