Caterham SP/300R race car revealed

Specialist British track car manufacturer Caterham has revealed its all-new lightweight sports car, the Caterham SP/300R, at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham.

Designed in collaboration with Lola Cars – a global leader in the field of customer race cars – the SP/300R is the brand’s first ever sports prototype racing car, and joins the famous Seven model in the Caterham stable in Kent.

Powered by a 2.0-litre Ford Duratec engine with 224kW of power, the 590kg racer flies from 0-100km/h in just 2.5 seconds – exactly the same time as the Bugatti Veyron.

Caterham is in the final stages of development of the SP/300R’s powertrain and handling characteristics in readiness for a one-make championship in 2012.

Only 25 vehicles will be produced each year to optimise build quality and maximise one-to-one customer service.

Caterham says a street-legal version of the SP/300R is also under consideration. A road-ready variant is not expected before 2013.

Caterham admits the design of the vehicle was led by aerodynamic considerations rather than aesthetics, but we don’t think there’s too much to complain about in terms of looks.

Designed using Lola’s Computational Fluid Dynamics technology, Caterham says the broad aero platform generates optimal downforce and balance.

The chassis is an aluminium tub and the mid-mounted engine is aligned longitudinally. The suspension is full race specification (derived from Lola Formula 3 and World Junior cars) and the tyres have been developed specially for the SP/300R by Cooper Avon Tyres.

The Caterham SP/300R will be priced from £60,000 ($95,100) before local taxes.
