2008 FPV F6X preview

January 31, 2008 by Matt Brogan

The Ford Territory Turbo has held on to the honour of being the fastest six-cylinder SUV in Australia for some time, but now there is a new king. FPV have got their mits on Ford’s high riding warrior to bring us this, the Territory F6X.

2008 FPV Territory F6X

Based on the AWD Territory Turbo Ghia, the F6X boasts a 270kW version on Ford’s 4.0-litre six (think Typhoon) with some 550Nm on board, thats 25 more kW and 70 more Nm than the Territory Ghia Turbo.

All that powered is put through a ZF 6-speed auto transmission featuring Sequential Sports shift. Ford claims the might F6X will do the 0-100km/h dash in just 5.9 seconds, and all that for only $75,000 – they’re sure to move fast (pardon the pun).

With a claimed combined average of 14.9 litres/100km, the F6X is no fuel miser, but when you consider these performance times put the car within ear shot of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo or Mecedes’ ML63 AMG, your grin should far out weight any fuel bill worries.

The F6X also boasts several inclusions over the standard Turbo Ghia including standard ESP, firmer suspension, side curtain airbags, recalibrated ABS and traction control settings and big six-pot Brembo brakes.

Ford believes the car will have a wide appeal:

“It is likely that the F6X will attract customers with a range of driving requirements and styles – from the family that enjoys performance motoring through to the enthusiastic sports oriented driver and those F6 sedan owners who are looking to upgrade to a SUV,” said General Manager, Ford Performance Vehicles Rod Barrett.

2008 FPV Territory F6X

From the inside the car receives a unique two-tone leather seat trim with a prominent ‘F6X’ logo embroidered on each headrest.

“The interior is quite different from anything currently available in the FPV range and the two-tone seat trim creates a real visual impact.” Barrett said

As with all FPV vehicles, each F6X comes with its own unique FPV build plate. You also get Ford’s Interior Command Centre (ICC) system that controls the 6-disc in-dash CD player, colour screen and dual zone climate control. The F6X also gets the highly sought after reverse parking camera.

The car will be available at selected Ford dealers from February 29, the F6X will debut at the Melbourne International Motor Show.

While there’s no doubt the mechanical package looks impressive (although a little thirsty) I cant help but feel theres been little effort externally do make it stand out from the pack. The stripe on the side looks like its straight out from the 70’s or 80’s!

Surely if HSV can make its sedans look the goods, why can’t FPV make the F6X look any better than a standard territory TX with alloys and a pinstripe!

5/5 for the mechanicals, 1/5 styling total 6/10!

  2. smokin'R32 says:

I really think FPV has dropped the ball on this one, looks like every other territory on the road, is it that hard to put a body kit on the thing? That interior is pretty garish too. At least it goes like stink

  3. Casey says:

Sometimes being subtle is a good thing. Ever had your M3 keyed for standing out? I have. I’d much prefer something that looks plain and goes hard.

  4. Carl says:

Looks like Ford Oz was given a very small budget for this thing. I agree with the pin stipes they look the ones from the 70’s….. i say this because i really like the territory and it deserves better!!

  5. Anthony says:

Near enough to $80,000 OTR. That’s seems a tad overpriced doesn’t it?

On a positive note, the engine and transmission is superb.

  6. Anthonii says:

I wonder how this fairs against the TRD Hilux.
I am aware that one is a people mover and one is a workhorse, though both having a blower in a larger standing cars should be interesting.

  7. alec says:

I love it.. but why only 18’s??

  8. Frugal One says:

I would like a chipped and larger intercooler etc std.Turbo Terri.

Something like 350kW is easy to reach.Nizpro etc.

Theres has 450kW, to mucjh for me:

    http://www.nizpro.com.au/terror_tory_main.html

BUT the bonnet scoop has to go, its a total give away, even with these mods. will be heaps cheaper and better than the FPV job.

    0 – 100kmh in 4.5s, yes please!

    Cheers

    F-0

  9. Rob says:

Don’t think much of the interior … a bit tacky IMHO

  10. John S says:

looks nice…but with petrol these days…i think i will stick with my focus…not hotted up version! haha!

  11. A-ron says:

interestingly thoes stripes look like they would fit into the new lower door cutouts on the orion?

  12. Joe says:

Not a fan of the interior…a little tacky.

The rims look rubbish too, as does the stripes.

A bit of time spent on packaging will make it look a bit tougher rather than boy-racerish like it does currently!

  13. Bubba Ganush says:

Well at least the kids will get dropped off to school in no time.

    pretty bland for an FPV

  14. Bret says:

I like it. Unlike others I really like the interior, but not sure on the stripes on the exterior. Subtle is good.
Styling wise, obiosly most of the $1M development went into mechanical aspects, rather than body kit.

  15. Steve Jones says:

This is nothing compared to my R35 GTR bitches!

    Thats how I roll!

  16. Josh says:

Seats design looks like Supercheap Auto $30 seat cover with FPV logo on it

  17. Bavarian Missile says:

Ok Phoonfan……..why not put the upgraded Phoon motor in it ?

  18. Ivan says:

I wouldn’t mind this to give to my wife..hehehe.
I think I like the subtle exterior (IMO), I think FPV is doing a good job making a car that can compete in the likes of porsche cayenne (perfromance only), and with a price a fraction of that.

    Although I wouldn’t mind a Land Rover Sports Supercharged…. :D

  19. ScottB says:

That’s how you roll, Steve? Nah, I’m thinking you’re more the kind to drive a Datsun 120Y. With crappy plastic spinners on the wheels and fake wool seat covers. That seems more up your alley. :)

  20. Jacob says:

    Nasty interior…Yawn

  21. phoonfan says:

Car was engineered for the 270kw motor quite a while ago, but only approved for production a relatively short time ago and with only 18mths of life left in the current model proved, too expensive to re-engineer for the extra HP/torque. Not as simple as just plonking in a motor when the weight and handling Characteristics are completely different from the sedans.
FPV is well aware that the car has been “underdone” in terms of styling (hammerd after Sydney motor Show) but is committed with production suppliers etc!

  22. Bavarian Missile says:

    Thanks babe……….Tiger xxx

  23. Oz. says:

It’s abit plain looking, 270KW is awsome in a Terri but soon a 300KW powerhouse.

  24. Blue Blood says:

Needs more aggressive styling, way too conservative and no styling hints to the Orion.

    Disappointing!!

  25. Liam says:

The interior makes me sigh, the stripe makes me giggle and the name plate, oh lord ‘I drive an FPV F6X 270.. err it’s a Territory but faster’ yeah that just rolls off the tongue at the pub.

They’re about 2-3 years late with the product and even more with the look.

    My .02

  26. AGM says:

Mechanically the F6X is awesome…great for sticking it up the Germans at a fraction of the cost. Problem is it’s way too bland! Needs at the very least a far more aggressive front airdam and a more integrated stripe package, not to mention a larger rear spoiler. Still, I’d buy one…

  27. Andrew M says:

the exterior would have looked better if they simply copied the typhoon spoiler and rid the stripe (im sure the stripe will be optional???)

i actually like the interior though. i think it will look even better in the flesh too. its not the best angle to showcase an interior.
the photo should have been looking down on the interior, but they obviously wanted to catch the over head consoles in the one snap. if you look across to the passenger seat the contours are a bit more evident.

I’d actually like to hear the handling reviews on one of these since they have tweeked it. it already gains high marks for its handling for being an SUV so lets see…..

i would have said drop it another 2 inches still ha ha ha

  28. TP says:

Looks crap both inside and out… costs a ridiciulous amount of money… very much doubt their acceleration claims given it will no doubt weight 2 tonnes…. which links to handling or should I say the lack of it given its no more than a barge on wheels.

  29. TP says:

Oh and did I mention the Kluger which is only 1 second slower in reality, completely kitted out with features Ford dont even have as options yet, is cheaper!?

  30. HFA says:

“Mechanically the F6X is awesome…great for sticking it up the Germans at a fraction of the cost.”

Sure, this one goes fast… but how else it is superior to an X5 (entry models in the $80K-$90K bracket)?

Sit inside this car and sit inside an X5, and the difference in craftsmenship is plain to see.

  31. golfschwein says:

At least it won’t fall over, TP.

Despite that, will it sell half a dozen or by the hundreds?

  32. golfschwein says:

I agree with an earlier post; will you be able to tell people what you’ve bought after 10 pm? I wouldn’t be able to pronounce it after 9! And if I could, I’d then have to say to people that it’s a Ford Territory.

Then I’d walk out to the car park, open the door and eyeball the cackulous interior and REALLY start to question how much I drank!

  33. Andrew M says:

    TP,
    mate get over it.
and the way you rush into ford posts all the time with such a biased negative attitude still makes you wonder why we all laugh when we see your bias getting around

also just have a read and you will see that your beloved curtain airbags ARE standard on this

  34. Itchy Rat says:

Incedibly lame design effort of FPV’s part!! The TT Ghia looks a more cohesive package. WTF is with the 2 tone seats and stripes?? Someone at FPV’s had a 70’s flash back.

I’ve owned an F6 for over 3 years and always wanted FPV to do an F6 Terri. Bloody disspointed with the final package and certainly not worth the wait.

  35. Oz. says:

Toyota Paul(TP): Say something relevant for once, or you should be banned. All your comments are the same – pointless and abusive.

  36. Andrew M says:

    TP,
have you responded to my LPG question to you yet? or have you convieniently forgotten about it?

at least what i said about the TRD Hilux was constructive/fair critisism, and given that i know a hell of a lot more about Hilux’s than you perhaps my comments were more warrented than yours.

i simply dont “barge” into toyota posts in the way you “barge” your way in here

  37. Nick says:

TP have you read the Feb edition of Wheels? I wouldn’t be cowing on about the Kluger if i were you. The ESP program on the thing is so poorly calibrated, that they managed to roll one during testing. On the F6X, very bland looking. Needs to roll on 20’s, with more distinct body styling. Also think a front mount intercooler, without having a bonnet scoop would suit the target market a tad more. Engine/driveline package is outstanding though.

  38. William says:

On another note, is that Blueprint Blue I see making a comeback on this particular F6X?

  39. Watto_Cobra says:

I’ll pass on the Cartwheel Kluger TP.

  40. Stumpy says:

Yes the styling is underdone but as the story lists to get something that will go quicker in this type of package you’d have to spend about twice the money or more.

I don’t like the black and white leather though if it was avalible in a different colour package it would be fine.

A set of 20’s or even 24’s would also help the exterior look, lets face it these things aren’t going offroad.

Hopefully the update version will be a more complete package in terms of styling.

  41. Okko says:

After reading the critism aimed at the TRD Hilux, i don’t understand why this example from FPV hasn’t recieved the same flack.

    Styling underdone and boring.

I’ll take the TRD Hilux thanks, atleast i can go off-road.

    Very Disappointed.

  42. Okko says:

Stumpy – despite it’s $75 000 price tag, why buy a SUV if you will not use it for light off-road duties ocassionaly and if that’s the case then why buy the Territory over a Sedan. Atleast the TRD Hilux retains it’s off-raod ability hence diffientiates itself somewhat from the Aurion.

  43. Elitist says:

I cant believe Ford is still doing the wet suit material interiors…Is that because rednecks spill their beer alot?

  44. David says:

^^ & the F6X logo on the headrests is tacky

  45. Glen says:

Looks like any other territory. And those wheels, they are the worst looking territory wheels out there. Why could’nt FPV make something similar to the 18″ Typhoon rims for it. Would look so much better. It should’ve looked more like the R7 concept from a couple of years ago.

The interior i think is pretty good. Its different from just plain grey or black leather. Need to see it in the flesh though. Overall disappointed in the looks but its something i wouldnt buy anyway so maybe their target market would.

  46. tonyn says:

most of you guys know how ford mad i am, but are you listening to the public ford?????

What a discrase, wheels look ugly too small, side steps on a performance car? what the?? and the stripes are disgusting!

Just another load of halfbaked crap prodrive has dumped on the australian public!

God i hope they get the orion right or all of us ford fans are up a certain creek!

Prodrive should look at porsche and see how an elegant, tough sports SUV should look, not like this crap!

Side stripes remind me of P76 targa florio side stripes!

  47. Bavarian Missile says:

hahaha…………….geez honey don’t you like it?

  48. K.Rashleigh says:

    BORING AS BAT S…

Okko, you are right my man, atleast the TRD Hilux is a more individual vehicle to the Aurion then this half-hearted effort from Ford compared to the rest of the FPV range.

Ford believes this will appeal to a wide range of people so surely the TRD Lux would have to appeal to a even wider audience. The F6X will go down the gurgler long before the Toyota.

  49. tonyn says:

not really, they could of put 20″ wheels on it, no stripes, and a classier trim and it would go close to competing with Q7,ML and X5 maybe even porsche!

This is just half baked to me, reminds me of TRD hilux!

  50. tonyn says:

it copped bad reviews at the sydney motorshow an they still did it! thats what annoys me!
