2011 Ferrari 599 GTO arrives in Australia

The Ferrari 599 GTO – the fastest ever Ferrari road car around the Fiorano test track – has landed in Australia.

But before you race down to your local dealer for a test drive, we’ve got some bad news.

All 10 vehicles destined for Australia have already been sold, and their owners all parted with more than $1 million to join one of the most exclusive owners clubs in the world.

Just 599 of the 599XX-based Italian supercars will be built, and the first one to arrive in Australia (pictured here) will be the only local vehicle finished in the optional full matt black/white stripe paint combination.

Ferrari says the GTO is more closely related to the 599XX experimental track car than the GTB production version, and as a result, performance of the 599 GTO is simply mind-bending.

The 5999cc V12 is taken straight from the 599XX (although it has been modified to comply with Euro V emissions standards) and produces 500kW of power at 8250rpm and 620Nm of torque at 6500rpm. That’s 44kW and 12Nm more than the standard 599 GTB Fiorano.

Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes just 3.35 seconds (0.35secs quicker than the 599 GTB) and it has a top speed of 335km/h.

All this combines for a wild lap around the famous Ferrari Fiorano test track in 1 minute 24 seconds, one second faster than the previous record holder, the Ferrari Enzo.

Ferrari has fitted the GTO with lighter second-generation carbon-ceramic brakes, aerodynamic enhancements, wider tyres on the front for better road-holding, and the new Virtual Race Engineer driver-car interface, which provides the driver with instant performance information.

Ferrari says the new Brembo brakes can pull the GTO up from 100km/h in just 32.5m.

It is also equipped with a redesigned crankshaft, a racing-style intake system with a new manifold, new springs, stiffer anti-roll bar, Ferrari’s second-generation magnetorheological suspension control system, Vehicle Dynamic Control and F1-Trac traction control.

Weight reduction was another focus of the 599 GTO’s development, and its dry weight of 1495kg (around 200kg less than the 599 GTB) was achieved through the use of thinner aluminium and glass, as well as revisions to the brakes, transmission and exhaust system.

Ferrari Australia general manager, Kevin Wall, said the 599 GTO represented “the pinnacle of Ferrari road cars in every area”.

“Only Ferrari could provide a car with the breadth and depth of ability with which the 599 GTO has been endowed, using Formula One technology and design that has then been honed to perfection in the unique FXX program,” Mr Wall said.

“The 599 GTO is the new definition of the ultimate road car and the 10 Australian owners are able to look forward to a truly unique driving experience at every level.”
