Hyundai Veloster coming to Australia late 2011

That's right, Hyundai Australia has just confirmed the sporty little Hyundai Veloster is heading Down Under. The car was only just unveiled a couple of days ago at the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Upon first speculation, many punters assumed that the eco-focused model would not be heading our way, but now a Hyundai press release has confirmed the model will be sold in the Australia market. This would widen up the segment a bit by providing an athletic car that is also environmentally conscious. Since there aren't many other cars in our current market that offer a similar package to the Hyundai Veloster, it should do very well.

The Ford Fiesta Econetic, Honda Insight and perhaps some Volkswagen Golf models are the main rivals that come close to the Veloster category; only the upcoming Honda CR-Z will present the same characteristics. With its 103kW of power and 167Nm of torque, the 1.6-litre direct injection engine is set to provide ample fun for the 1172kg light weight.

As our previous report mentioned, the Veloster is said to offer fuel consumption ratings on par with more seriously focused eco-cars. Hyundai says the Veloster will offer a consumption rating of around 5.9L/100km.

A definite release date is yet to be sorted, but Hyundai Australia says to expect an introduction later this year. The company also says pricing and specific details of the Australian model will be released later in the year.
