Audi A1 Quattro prototype snow testing in Canada

Since Audi launched the Audi A1 just a few months ago, the world has been waiting for an all-wheel drive variant to enter the lineup. The company itself has now released images of an Audi A1 Quattro prototype being tested in snowy conditions in Canada.

Audi has said the car will be a part of the 'Fascination of Quattro' celebration event that will commemorate 30 years of all-wheel drive technology. The event is set to take place in Montreal and will feature many historic legends as well as showcase some future classics and concept models.

No official details or specifications on the Audi A1 Quattro have been released at this stage, but one thing is for sure, it will enter the market as one of the only cars to offer all-wheel drive in its segment. All Audi has said is that the Quattro system will be the same as the one used on the Audi A3 Quattro and Audi TT.

This means there will be a electro hydraulic multi-plate clutch system in the rear differential. Under normal driving conditions, most of the engine's power will be transmitted through the front wheels until any slip is detected. In the case of front wheel slip, the rear clutch will actuate and power will be sent through to the rear wheels as well.

Further information on the Audi A1 Quattro is expected to be released in the next few months. We'll keep you updated.
