Mazda2 three-door hatch in Geneva

January 25, 2008 by George Skentzos

The stylish super mini just got even smaller, with Mazda set to debut a three-door hatch version of its acclaimed Mazda2 at the 78th annual Geneva International Motor Show.

Tiny Mazda2 Three-Door Hatch

This is the first time any Mazda2 will be offered with just two doors, giving it a sportier look and making it even more affordable.

It is aimed at attracting new customers in the key European markets, where it has received a five-star adult occupant protection on Euro-NCAP crash testing and more than 20 automotive awards.

These include Car of the Year awards in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Greece and New Zealand, along with the Japan RJC Car of the Year.

The three-door will come with the same MZR 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre gasoline, powertrains, and the same MZ-CD 1.4-litre common-rail diesel, as the five-door hatchback and weighs in at under 1000kg.

    looks better than 4 door.
diesel averages 65mpg – will mazda bring it to aus?

  2. Carl says:

Lcat; Naaaaa we’re not important enough for the Japs!

  3. Duck says:

It looks really good in two door form i wonder what it’s base cost will start from…………..$13,990?

Sorry Car Advice, but Web Wombat got this before you!

  4. Myke says:

With a 1.5l engine I think it would be $500-$2000 cheaper than the 5-door ($16500).

  5. Duck says:

So same price as a 2 door Getz!

  6. David (OMC) says:

With a 4door Genki on order I’m happy with that as I think that the 2door will be 3/4 to a year away….they look great and a sports model would be the go..lets see how far down Mazda can drop the price to compete successfully against the two leaders Yaris & Getz….Mazda bring in the diesel.

  7. Duck says:

Mazda probaly will sell more two doors than the four!

  8. harry says:

very clever mazda. this ought be a sweet little car. yep, if diesel is an option, they’ll blitz it. well done, great design, very crisp.

  9. Mitchell Oke says:

Hmm, no I don’t think they’d sell more two than four doors, but damn this thing looks great! I mean the 4-door looks pretty slick, this only makes it better! Easily the best looking car in the class.

  10. Anthony says:

More gold for Mazda – but they still need to step up with the Mazda 3 and 6 designs which are both dated.

  11. Duck says:

I think the Mazda 6 is bring out the new model at the end of the year, but i dont know about the Mazda 3!

  12. Myke says:

From rumours I’ve heard, roughly 2009 for a new Mazda 3.

  13. Dave OMC says:

The new Mazda 6 will be launched at the end of Feb and a facelifted 3 will arrive this year mid to late 2008 and a new model late 2009..

Mazda bring in the turbo diesel and cap the baby market….

  14. No Name says:

Dave OMC – The Mazda 6 is already here in the UK see a few banging around. The deisel stats for the 6 are not particulary impressive at 10.9 compared to the Mondeo’s sub 10’s.

    Nice looker though

  15. Carl says:

From what i’ve read we won’t get the Mazda 6 diesel until next year, BUT we will get a newer better engine mated to an auto box!!

  16. Anon says:

Yes I can confirm new Mazda 6 is coming out next month, I spoke to a dealership who had already driven it. They would be bias, however they claim it will be very competititve against luxury brand models. Collecting my new Mazda 2 tomorrow…disappointed that the 3 door exists, but I’m not waiting for it…5 door (in the right colour) is pretty flash…but I may be tempted to do a trade in later on down the track if the 3 door comes to our shores.
