Toyota vs GM – Toyota wins!
January 25, 2008 by Alborz Fallah
Yesterday we posted an article outlining the battle between General Motors and Toyota Motor Co., the numbers looked too close to call, but as we mentioned, GM was counting its sales in China in its overall total.
GM had a solid year in 2007, with sales growing all over the world (except in the US), but it is now the world’s second-largest automaker.
GM had included 516,435 vehicles of the Wuling brand in China as part of its total, despite owning a minority share in the operation.
The industry practise is to only include sales of majority-owned subsidiaries, which meant GM slipped well behind Toyota with 8,885,599 sales in 2007, while the Big T managed an estimated 9,370,000. Official figures from Toyota will be released in a few weeks.
Other manufacturers such as Ford, are also not allowed to count sales of minority owned subsidiaries such as Mazda (Ford owns 33.4 percent of Mazda).

I knew it!……………poor GM! (toyota paul will say something in this post!)
So the other 66.6% of mazda is is owned by mazda alone is that right?
Thought so.
Toyota makes cars designed for westerners.
But hey their build quality is excellent. Toyota now takes the commercial and tradys market. Wheres holden and GM now?
Duck,
No not correct. Mazda is a listed company with shareholders, largest of which is Ford. So whilst Fords stake in Mazda is a minority holding for these purposes they are in fact THE major shareholder. And do exercise the considerable control that that gives.
Hahaha
Nice try GM…good way to improve your image is trying to trick the consumers…very smart move!!
Congrats Toyota
cool so the smart corporate move would to be invest 51% into many companies inorder to be able to count 100% of sales from each, whilst investing in twice the amount of companies.
sales would double overnight!!!!!!!!
Easier said than done Andrew M!
I know mate,
it was a bit of a “funny”
i was just having a go at the way they are or are not able to count sales of particular brands
How can you declare a winner without having confirmed numbers from Toyota?
Where is GM? Where is Ford and Chrysler?
Did I miss something? Are trade and commercial vehicles two different categorys now? Toyota has the market here but not in the states where it counts.
School holidays still… ;)
i think toyota really makes in roads with sales in their own country (asian cities).
in those places GM and ford is pretty much non existant. asians have a lot of respect for their own products no matter what it is. they are very loyal when it comes to purchasing.
and toyota doesnt have europe either. ford pretty reigns through there
Was there EVER any doubt this was going to happen?
Whats more important is that BigT have a better product, better engineered and better made…The market has spoken!
Cheers
F-0
Ok F-O, then a Big Mac is the best meal, VB the best beer and Marsbar the best snack.”…The market has spoken!”
C’mon get real – market penetration is rarely a reflection of product, but rather a reflection of marketing.
In Aus vehicle sales V dollars spent on advertising, Toyota are down the list.
Toyotas are not hugely superior to anything else, regardless of your propaganda.
Disscussion welcomed, but No I’m not comming back with another comment when attacked over this, so don’t bother
Bret – lets face it … Toyota are not the ones in dire straights like GM, Ford and Chrysler – are they.
The situation the American trio have found themselves in just proves that those brands are not all cracked up to be what some people so religiously believe.
Get over it – obviously Toyota in the modern world is a far superior automotive manufactuer then the American owned companies.
Yes dingo “Toyota in the modern world is a far superior automotive manufactuer then the American owned companies”.
However, the emphasis is on company not product.
Toyota products are good, so are many others.
My point was simply that market dominance is not necessarily an indicator of the best product. Toyota do not build the worlds best cars accross all of their ranges, in fact some are quite poor compared to their direct competitors – Get over it!
Bret – although that may be true in some regards, Toyota however just happens to be one the most consistant companies and as far as i am concerned – they are highly competitive right across thier entire range of vehicles.
Great example – from light cars to large, SUVs, off-road vehicles, hybrids to commercials and people movers … each and every example they offer are amoung the most competitive in their respective field while more Toyota’s fill the top ten best sellers these days in Australia then any other manufactuer.
Now… lets take note of Holden – apart from the higher spec Commodores – the rest of thier fleet ranges from ‘very average’ to the ’some of the worst’ … PERIOD
So while Toyota provide a consistantly highly competitive fleet right across it’s entire board – Holden is up, down and all over the place offering absolutely no consistancy what so ever.
That said – despite some increased issues of late – Toyota has constantly and consistantly remained amoung the best performers for maintaining quality, dependable and, durable vehicles while rating extremely high in customer satisfaction ratings.
That said – lets be frank …- Holdens and Fords are undeniably amoung the worst performers of all… PERIOD !!
So basically to the point of it all – despite Toyota’s diverse range of vehicles … they have maintained consistancy unlike Holden despite thier smaller field.
And while Holden offers pretend luxury cars – Toyota has Lexus offering the world with some of the finest appointed luxury vehicles in the world today.
So lets face it – Toyota have got it all over Holden and Ford in todays society to the point that they outsold Holden by 90 000 units last year up from 66 000 the year before while beginning to make a habit of outselling Holden and Ford combined on some given months and that sort of genocide just simply does not happen by mistake.
Much unlike GM and Ford – Toyota is undeniable one of the world’s most balanced automotive manufactuers today and growing stronger and more influential by the year.
Dingo,
just slow down for a minute mate lets not let ths one turn into an abusive post.
Now Bret raises a very good point.
the emphasis is on superior toyota “company” and not “product”.
the proof is in the pudding that the 2 biggest sellers for toyota is the corolla and Hilux BUT neither of them are actually near the top of their class for ability or what they offer.
its the same with the VE commodore, which you quite often remind us as being a joke yet it is the #1 seller. is that a sign of superior product or superior marketing? Marketing of course. holden has created a very good image surrounding the commodore hence people “just want one”
it can also be said that the 3 top sellers here in OZ are seen as “default” choices in each of their categories because neither of the 3 are class leading vehicles but rather the sales result of very good marketing
i do agree with you that holdens fleet has no consistancy in that one minute they pour 1 billion into one car and then go and import dirt cheap shyte boxes (Daewoos).
once again who cares that one brand sells more than the other unless you have shares in them.
is a toyota or GM product better than a porsche because they sell more?
