Video: Porsche 918 RSR Coupe Concept unveiled at Detroit

Porsche has unveiled the awesome Porsche 918 RSR Coupe Concept at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The company has also released a video covering the world premiere.

At first, the car doesn't appear all that futuristic in design, it offers 'normal' proprotions and curves typical of something that could have debuted in 2008. It's not until you dive into the finer details that the 918 RSR Coupe starts to show its form.

Porsche describes the technology as a combination of Porsche GT3 R Hybrid and Porsche 918 Spyder mechanics, offering superior on-track performance while remaining in tune with current electric power capabilities. In short, the 918 RSR uses a 3.4-litre V8 outputting 420kW of power. This output is achieved at a colossal 10,300rpm, like a proper, top-spec, racing car.

On top of the fuel-powered engine, the car also gets two, 75kW electric motors which power the front wheels. A torque-vectoring system is also used, enabling power to be distributed between each wheel according to available traction. The electric power systems are then backed up by a flywheel accumulator which collects electrical charge whenever the car is decelerating.

Much of the 918 RSR Coupe's exterior design is the same as the Porsche 918 Spyder we first saw a few months ago, only the coupe has a roof, obviously, and a new engine induction vent mounted on it. The coupe also makes do with passenger accommodation, a space which is now dedicated to the flywheel accumulator.
