2012 Audi A9 almost official, will use Audi A8 platform

Audi is starting to think very strongly about an Audi A9 model to join the top-shelf lineup in 2012. International reports are saying the A9 would be built using the modular longitudinal architecture (MLB) chassis that currently underpins the Audi A8.

The Audi A9 would sit above the Audi A8 in terms of trim level and price, and offer a few distinct engines exclusive to the A9. These engines will also allow it to compete with rivals such as the Porsche Panamera and the Mercedes-Benz CLS.

Interestingly, there's also talks of the Audi A9 becoming the basis for the potential production version of the Lamborghini Estoque four-door. Although, to set the two cars apart, the Audi A9 could get a 6.3-litre W12 engine and a 4.0-litre V8, while the Lamborghini would use the 5.2-litre V10 (also seen in the Lamborghini Gallardo).

Reports say the Lamborghini version would rival the likes of the Aston Martin Rapide and the Bentley Continental GT.

Nothing is official yet, but an insider has told Autocar in the UK,

"The project isn’t officially confirmed for production, but work is progressing on the business case, both at an accountancy and engineering level."

We'll bring you more updates as they come.
