Toyota Prius expected to be US top-seller by 2020

Toyota Motor Corp. in the US has announced that it expects the Toyota Prius, and subsequent versions, to be the brand's top-selling car in the country by 2020.

In order to do this, the Prius hybrid car will need to overtake the current top-selling car in America, the Toyota Camry. Toyota's vice president for US sales, Bob Carter, is adamant the Prius will get there. He said in a recent press interview,

"We will end the decade with Prius being the No. 1 nameplate in the industry." He said the Camry "will be a close second, and that's not because there will be a drop in Camry sales."

The Toyota Prius is the world's number one hybrid car in terms of sales - not that it has loads of competition - but if fuel prices continue to rise it just might get there.

A Toyota Prius MPV variant will also join the showroom, stretching out the range somewhat. This model is set to debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit later this month.

Expanding the range even more and providing yet more leverage in favour of the Prius will be a plug-in Prius hybrid said to go on sale some time in 2012.
