2022 Audi Q5 Sportback 50 TDI certified for Australia

Audi SUV coupe range poised to expand, as government documents reveal a new V6 diesel variant has been certified to sell alongside the sporty SQ5.

The 2022 Audi Q5 Sportback range could soon expand in Australia, with Audi's local arm certifying a new 'flagship' 50 TDI variant for sale locally.

Details published on the federal government's Road Vehicle Certification System (RVCS) database lists the Q5 Sportback 50 TDI as certified for sale in Australia.

If the 50 TDI is introduced locally, it would be sold alongside 40 TDI and 45 TFSI variants of Audi's mid-size coupe SUV, pricing and specifications for which were announced last week.

The vehicle was also listed on the Australian government's Green Vehicle Guide website, though the page was taken down after CarAdvice contacted Audi Australia for comment.

Power in the 50 TDI comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel engine, sending 210kW and 620Nm to all four wheels through an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Above and throughout: European-specification Audi Q5 Sportback 45 TFSI S Line.

It's aided by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, cutting fuel economy to 6.7-6.9L/100km on Europe's more realistic WLTP test cycle. Audi quotes a 5.7-second run from 0 to 100km/h.

The now-removed Green Vehicle Guide listing confirmed the vehicle would benefit from the S Line package as standard, along with a choice of 20- or 21-inch alloy wheels, as per the wider Q5 Sportback range.

Expect other standard features to include matrix LED headlights, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, head-up display, and a power-adjustable steering column.

Pricing has yet to be revealed, though expect the Q5 Sportback 50 TDI to start from between $95,000 and $100,000 before on-road costs – in line with the $8000-$10,000 price differences between 'wagon' and Sportback variants of the lesser 40 TDI and 45 TFSI, and the $89,600 before on-roads price assigned to the regular Q5 50 TDI.

The SQ5 Sportback TDI will remain the flagship of the range, both on price (at $110,900 before on-road costs) and performance (with a 251kW/700Nm 3.0-litre diesel V6).

When contacted by CarAdvice, Audi Australia did not clarify whether the 50 TDI would be introduced locally.

A spokesperson said "we have no additions to our Q5 Sportback range to announce," adding it is common for car companies to certify additional variants for possible introduction at a later date.

However, new vehicles are rarely listed on the Green Vehicle Guide unless the manufacturer plans to introduce them for sale.
