Video: BMW i8 to be based on BMW EfficientDynamics Concept

By Brett Davis |

BMW has recently been caught filming what appears to be the production version of the BMW EfficientDynamics Concept, expected to be called the BMW i8, during the filming of some kind of promotional video. The footage doesn’t show the car in full detail but it’s easy to see where the design inspiration came from.

Rumours and reports say the new BMW i8 will offer a fairly new proposition to the market in terms of a hybrid sports car. It will feature a small petrol-powered three-cylinder motor and two electric motors adding up to a tantalising cocktail. Reports say the sleek coupe will offer around 240kW of power and an enormous 800Nm of torque – mainly thanks to the two electric motors.

The car should be capable of breaking through the five-second barrier during 0-100km/h sprints and have a potential top speed beyond 250km/h when it arrives on the market during 2013. Check out the video below for a bit of a sneak peek. We’ll be sure to bring plenty more updates on this one as they arrive.

  • Devil’s Advocate

BMW have been using this car in their commercials for end of year clearance advertising with their “free on roads” programme etc. I have seen it a few times over the last couple of weeks. Considering this was posted on youtube over a month ago it is possible that is what they were filming. The commercial basically shows the car driving along from side on and as it is moving it flashes between various models in the range that have “free on road” costs at the moment.

$50 says this exact concept won’t make it to production because those huge side windows aren’t crashworthy. They’re going to modify the crap out of it.
