Abu Dhabi roads receive coloured roads for new speed limit

Just in case you miss the new speed limit signs on the side of the road while driving in Abu Dhabi, the UAE city will be adding coloured layers to its road surface to announce areas which have had their speed limits reduced.

The Abu Dhabi Police released a statement yesterday in which they announced they have begun demarcation of certain roads with the coloured layers, and new patrols.

The reason is these are residential areas, and have new lower speed limits to save lives. Incidentally, the areas which receive the colours are between 20km/h and 40km/h, well under Australia's residential speed limits.

The highway limits remain the same.

"Drivers can easily identify the "[coloured] portion" on the road and they have to reduce their speed before reaching there," said Colonel Engineer Hussain Ahmad Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols at the Abu Dhabi Police.

Should this technique be used as a road safety initiative in Australia? We'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
