Toyota GR Yaris order books temporarily shut due to high demand

Toyota's rally-bred hero will no longer be available for order, as demand overwhelms supply and extends wait times.

Toyota has placed a pause on new orders for its 2021 Toyota GR Yaris hot hatch, as customer interest has seen demand outstrip supply, pushing wait times back into 2022.

Effective from 1 July 2021 (this Thursday), Toyota Australia will no longer receive new GR Yaris orders – and it's unclear how long order books will be closed for, with the brand stating it will "announce a recommencement of [orders] ... soon".

Toyota says it will "continue to negotiate to secure more supply" for Australia – with CarAdvice previously reporting the next batch of vehicles were due to arrive in the second half of 2021.

As previously reported, new orders placed in April 2021 would likely translate to a delivery date in early 2022 – with Toyota's latest announcement suggesting wait times had been pushed back even further, leading to a pause of new orders to allow supply to catch up to existing demand.

"To support passionate fans and the upcoming delivery of all vehicles ordered by customers to date, Toyota Australia has made the decision to place a temporary pause from July 1 on receiving future orders for GR Yaris, and expects to announce a recommencement of order taking for this much loved vehicle soon," Toyota Australia said in a statement.

"The GR Yaris is a fan favourite with enthusiasts and we are pleased that we have been able to ignite the performance-car market. This vehicle continues to exceed expectations and we look forward to continuing our momentum with the GR brand in Australia," said Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations.

Toyota says about 1700 examples of the GR Yaris have been delivered in Australia since its launch in November 2020 – translating to about 40 to 45 per cent of overall Toyota Yaris sales over the same period.

That's in addition to around "over 2200 orders including both GR Yaris and GR Yaris Rallye" as of April 2021, with the exact number as of publishing (at the end of June 2021) likely sitting even higher.
