Toyota to unveil TRD HiLux in Brisbane
January 17, 2008 by George Skentzos
Unlike the TRD Aurion which has received a mixed reception as a result of its enormous power being sent to the wrong wheels, the TRD HiLux promises to be Toyota’s savior when it makes its debut at the Brisbane International Motor Show.
Queensland manager Sean Hanley has said the TRD HiLux has completed its final stage of testing and would begin production late February for its market debut in the second quarter of 2008.
“HiLux is now the best-selling vehicle in Queensland, so it is fitting for Queensland motorists to be the first to see the final production version of the TRD-enhanced model,” Mr Hanley said.
The standard HiLux, revered for its rugged styling, unbreakable reputation and excellent off-road credentials is sure to benefit from the transplanted supercharger coupled with its proven four-wheel drive system.
Toyota has not yet disclosed the official numbers for the supercharged TRD HiLux, although expect more than a 25 per cent gain over the standard 175kW and torque to jump to well over 400Nm.

Yeah I’m Toyota inclined myself, but with restraint… I don’t by any means see Toyota as the be all and end all of the auto industry. I have a soft spot for their older performance cars, but yeah, there’s really much to be proud about anymore. My first car was a camry, but I got a new celica a couple of years ago. It’s by no means a quick car, but it’s not something to be ashamed of either. The engine was the first all aluminium production engine in the world if I can recall, and has one of the best power / engine weight ratios of production engines in the world (which is why it’s in the elise/exige).
But yeah, if I was shopping around for a new car today, nothing of Toyota’s current lineup would interest me in the slightest. They simply don’t have any cars that I would be looking for. The discontinuation of their supra/mr2/celica has left a gaping hole, which hopefully will be filled up by the new FT-HS.
