Evo X vs MY08 STi vs MY07 STi vs EVO IX

This is a video that Subaru fans have all been waiting for, the new MY08 STi up against the EVO X/IX and the previous generation STi.

As you can see by the final numbers, the MY08 STi not only wins the race, but also sets the fastest lap. The new rally hero is a second faster than the old STi and the new EVO X.

The EVO IX was once again stronger against the newer model - slightly worrying for Mitsubishi. However as the inside line video showed last week, it is far more fun to drive.

CarAdvice is scheduled behind the wheel of the MY08 STi soon. Expect our own video for that one!

    Best Motoring is the best.

The only thing I understand is “Haiyai”, which means fast. And also “Sayonara”…I think everyone knows what that means…

Even the new STi looks a bit dodgy, the performance can’t be argued with.

Can Subaru get the WRC crown back with this car?

  4. gtcortina Says:

Needs to be quicker so no one sees you driving it

  5. Pinky Says:

Well, it was the Drift King driving the new STi, so I reckon the result’s inconclusive

    ; )

  6. Anthony Says:

can we please get professional race drivers for these contests

  7. Alex Says:

Well, they’re the professional race drivers - winners of the different Japanese and Asian races. For example, Keiichi Tsuchiya who was driving new STI has been a winner of several Nascar, Le Mans and All Japan GT and Formula Three events.

  8. Martin Says:

I dont think the new Evo would have done so bad, IF, it were more aerodynamic, I mean come on, the flat front would have caused more drag than the older model.

As I personally hate the new lancers, this is a big thing for me to be saying this much.

Its funny some are demanding “professional drivers”

I doubt they’d make the video with amatuers like most people here.

Again, reiterate my stance on the new STi. It looks nice too, people just keep envisioning it as a sedan.

    Its still ugly

like how I have been saying all along the new sti had to be quicker with more power/torque simalar weight to old model and a newer much improved chassis.. Also it was more obvious it is quicker than evo lancer with more power, less weight and a proper 6 speed manual!!! not stupid dsg or old 5 speed like in lancer! GO subaru love your work..

  12. Ivan Says:

The new STI is definitely not photogenic. But if you were to see in the metal, it does actually look buffy.

I myself haven’t seen it in the flesh, but every friend I know who’s seen it in the flesh are actually quite surprised, because the picture and the real thing is quite different.

Can’t wait for the Stig to drive both and compare the times. Maybe include the Golf R32 as well…=)

actually the Mitsu fans are decidedly quiet today!! Not a single post!

I really wonder what went wrong with the Mitsus getting 3,4,5 and the new glorified one of that breed getting dead last.

I still think for general use the DSG is a glorified auto and despite having quicker shift times, in the real world, the way you tell what gear you are in is by feel of the gear stick - Sound of engine revs (which some readers have posted as to how you know when to change gear) don’t necessarily tell you what gear you are in so you can tell exactly what you need to do so you end up where you want to be in terms of gearing. Having driven enough auto cars with ‘manual’ override in my opinion it is just a shit house way of changing gears - esp shifting down. It seems obvious that the Mitsu Evo MR driver, who is a professional, was struggling with it.

Seems the Evo MR really is the lazy mans ’sports’ sedan with the resultant lazy mans result. The truth is in the result of this race.

  14. Anthony Says:

I mentioned professional drivers as there were more than a few times when the apex was missed by a wide enough margin. But hey, if they have raced in the Le mans and Nascar series, then I stand corrected!

I think I’m just pissed off that the EVO’s got trounced!

  15. Bret Says:

This is perhaps a bit of a guess on my part as I can’t view CA videos behind our firewall (why is this Alborz - I can view them from other sites), but I think these comparisons are aften run with each driver back to back in each car, and the times averaged, so that the cars are compared not the drivers.

  16. Taka Says:

I agree with you Jamison the new STi does look nice. As I have said in the past, the new STi hatch platform is built ultimately for the WRC programme and to make a fast a rally car it must be in this form. It is a winning combination or “formula” and as a result you can see it beat the EVOX and |V hands down.

  17. Typhoid Says:

towards the end there is a segment where they decide which car they like best. almost all chose the evoX mr except the drift king.

being the drift king i suppose he has his reasons. btw the show is meant to be in a format with a bit of humour. with cars like evos or stis where they are able to handle it with ease (being professionals) they are less strung up and try to have fun while giving comments on their cars as well as in comparison to the cars they are racing against. i just wish they would continue the Best Motoring International series that has english subtitles.

i think Jeremy clarkson will also have the same opinion. he would slam the evoX for being slower. but he would also like the car. more than the sti

  18. Nick Says:

New STI = Weapon! I reckon an Evo6 would have finished between the 2 Subarus.
Ivan, how can you even type R32 and STI in the same sentence lol. If you were comparing them in a sense of being Grant Tourers, or in terms of fit and finish ,fair enough, but around the track. Please.

well I just came back from the detroit motor show industry day. and I went straight to the Subaru stand, and had a much closer look. Its does look nice… even my work mate who didnt like its look… said “its not bad” at all… and he actually got in and started looking at the brochure… and even examined the underbody…. hehe.. same here.

the red one is nice… its actually “tighter” looks wise. meaning its wider than the compact hatches but still small. The rear difuser combined with the quad exhaust looks mean as. And the front pumped out fenders really does have a lot of potential to house wider wheels which even gives it a much more aggressive look. If I was Subaru, I would of put 18×9 on the fronts and 18×10 on the rears, it makes a huge difference….
took a look at the Evo too… its not that special to be honest… it has a narrow look… Mitsubishi should of opted for a more aggressive fender design. The front look is still very aggressive looking, but it does have a “flat” front, which can increase drag, although it does allow a lot of air into the intercooler and engine.. so cooling will not have issues… from impressions anyways.

The interior is very nice also…. just a very good packaged car… it should win best performance car under 70k…. quiet easily in my opinion…
