2021 Hyundai i20 N starts production ahead of Australian launch; hot hatch quicker than expected

Hyundai's smallest N car goes into production with more torque and a quicker 0-100km/h time than initially promised.

Production of the 2021 Hyundai i20 N has started ahead of its Australian launch in the third quarter of 2021 (July to September), a few months later than the planned April arrival date.

The first examples of Hyundai's pint-sized hot hatch rolled off the production line in Izmir, Turkey late last week, with the i20 N joining the i10 micro car, regular i20 'light' city car, and sport-themed i20 N Line as the latest model built at the plant.

It is likely production for Australia will commence in the coming weeks, ahead of first local deliveries in the third quarter of 2021 (July to September) – a delay from the second-quarter 2021 (April to June) timing announced earlier this year.

The i20 N's European sales launch (set to occur in the coming months) has seen Hyundai confirm final technical specifications for its latest hot hatch – revealing it will be quicker than initially promised.

While the 1.6-litre turbo four-cylinder's base outputs haven't changed from the 150kW and 275Nm figures announced at the car's unveiling in October 2020, an overboost function in N mode ups turbocharger boost pressure to increase torque to 304Nm (from 2000-4000rpm).

The increased torque assists in cutting the claimed 0-100km/h time to just 6.2 seconds – half a second quicker than the 6.7-second claimed time announced in 2020, making the hot i20 the quickest front-wheel-drive model in its class, beating the Ford Fiesta ST's 6.5-second dash, and the Volkswagen Polo GTI's 6.7-second sprint.

The 2021 Hyundai i20 N is due to reach Australian showrooms between July and September 2021, pending any further delays.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed, however expect a starting price close to the rival Ford Fiesta ST's $32,290 before on-road costs, with just one highly-specified i20 N variant to be offered in Australia, with twin 10.25-inch screens and a roster of active safety technology.
