Genesis happy with progress in Australia; reaffirms commitment

More showrooms and more models are set to boost Hyundai's luxury arm.

Fledgling luxury brand, Genesis, is happy with its sales performance so far in Australia. The luxury arm of Hyundai has sold a total of 173 vehicles so far in 2021, a number the company says is a “very good result”.

Globally, Genesis recently surpassed 500,000 sales, a milestone that took five-and-a-half years to achieve. And that number looks set to grow with Genesis expanding to Europe in May, with showrooms opening shortly in Germany, the UK and Switzerland.

Driving the bulk of sales in Australia is the Genesis GV80, the brand’s large SUV finding 120 new homes so far in 2021. The brand’s pair of sedans, the G70 and G80 have contributed 35 and 18 sales respectively.

Those numbers are set to grow with the launch of the facelifted G70 this month, while the all-new GV70 medium SUV, due to go on sale later this year (July), will further bolster the bottom line.

“We’ve already collected more than a hundred orders [for the GV70] with customers yet to see the car,” said Connal Yan, Country Manager for Genesis in Australia.

Yan revealed Genesis’ plan for growth with new showrooms opening in Melbourne later this month, while Brisbane will get its dedicated showroom in 2022.

Additionally, there are now two Sydney-based ‘Test Drive Centres’, one in Parramatta, the other at Hyundai HQ in Macquarie Park. Another test drive centre is set to open on the Gold Coast in the third quarter of this year (July to September inclusive).

Genesis’ product portfolio is set to expand over the next 12 to 18 months following the launch of the refreshed G70 this month. That will be followed by the G70 ‘Shooting Brake’ wagon and the GV70 SUV, all due to land in 2021, while 2022 will see the Korean luxury brand expand into electrification with an electric version of the G80 sedan followed by two electric SUVs.

“We’re very much looking forward to this next big milestone for the brand. With all these developments we are very confident in building a sustainable [brand] for years to come,” said Yan.
