2011 Mazda BT-50 in Australia late-2011 with ESC

By Tim Beissmann |

Mazda Australia has announced the all-new Mazda BT-50 ute will be available with electronic stability control – a first for Mazda commercial vehicles in Australia.

Due to be launched in Australia in late 2011, local testing of the system (referred to as Dynamic Stability Control, or DSC, by Mazda) is being carried out to ensure it is calibrated for our specific driving conditions.

DSC is a standard feature on all Mazda passenger vehicles, and Mazda Australia said the decision was a reflection of demand from ute customers to have car-like levels of safety available across the range.

Stability control is available in the higher-specification Toyota HiLux, Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton models, and is either standard or optional on Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore utes.

The upcoming Volkswagen Amarok, which arrives in Australia next year, will come with stability control as standard, while the BT-50′s twin, the Ford Ranger, will be offered with DSC from its launch next year.

The new BT-50 is expected to be offered with Mazda’s next-generation SKYACTIV-G and SKYACTIV-D engines, as well as the new six-speed automatic transmission.

Although i really like the interior, and its probably going to be a good car, i just can’t take the exterior seriously.

I hope it looks more serious in reality. After all these are only pictures.

It didn’t look too bad at the Motorshow. I think the great interior makes up for the weird tail lights. The upcoming Ford Ranger is by far the best looking commercial vehicle i’ve ever seen and it’l be interesting to see how they compete!

  • Car Fanatic

Nope, looks exactlythe same. They had one at the motorshow and it’s not terribly exciting.

  • JEKYL & HYDE

The front kinda reminds me of a parrot, and rear is just ugly…

  • Shak

Its funny that Mazda released such a stylish vehicle i a segment that generally couldnt care less about looks. In all honesty the Ranger just looks better.

Nice Interior, shame about the Ssanyong exterior…*SHUDDER*

Personally I don’t think this vehicle is masculine enough in appearance for this particular segment, the lines are a little to feminine for a vehicle of this type. I’d go with a Ranger or Amarok simply for their looks.

  • TMG

With a lot more Female buyers entering this segment(and Fleet managers),I think Mazda will have a hit on it hands.

  • Alister

People dont buy these cars to look pretty and glamourous they buy a car in this segment to look serious and to suit a more male market. Most males (based on my opinion) will not not like the look of this as it looks like reps car from Wallace Bishop, when it is meant to look as though it is made for work sites and off road driving.

  • Car Fanatic

Allister, Mazda are marketing this as a lifestyle vehicle. They are looking at a wider target market than just contractors and tradies, hence the shapechange. I personally think it’s ugly but having driven several of these on offroad tracks they are quite capable and fun. If the new model has better capabilities, then looks aside, it will be an awesome vehicle.

I think I could get around the looks for the practicality.

It seem the more people who don’t like the look of the range Mazda’s on CA the better they sell.

So Mazda may be on a winner.

It’s not so much that this Mazda’s not going to appeal to everyone on it’s looks alone, it’s more so that for the same money other models such as the VW and Ranger will be available, so they’ll also be considered and on looks will probably earn the sale. Mazda dealers struggle to sell BT-5′s now, this won’t help improve that, probably just trickle along.

I have to say though, the interior is so very car like, that part is very appealing, maybe just get out of the car and don’t look at it :-) ok, that’s silly, just buy something else…

  • Popeye

The interior is sensational but the exterior is a real letdown, the only thing to do with one of these in my opinion is to put a tray on the back, as those tail-lights are dingo ugly and a bullbar on the front to hide that silly looking front-end.

The current BT-50 is a ‘very good thing’ and no doubt the new one will be even better, but it will look very, very good as well. I suspect Mazda (and Ford) will be onto a winner here.
I’ll certainly be giving it some serious consideration.

Love the spec’s not sure about the looks I’m a tradie mazda need to add more models hard waring floors not carpet how they are going to fit a winch bar on this without lossing aproch angles? we need tough trucks

  • Aleni

Love this new model, however it somewhat reminds me of the Navara and i hate when my vehicle looks like an imitation of another, but for now i am optimistic.
