2012 BMW 3 Series winter spy shots

Another brand out doing some extreme winter testing is BMW. The next-generation BMW 3 Series captured here was seen in northern Sweden undergoing snow driving wearing plenty of camouflaging.

The front end of the car looks like it will adopt the new front grille design also seen on the 2012 BMW 6 Series and is more pronounced than the previous model, almost looking like the snout of a shark.

Both headlights are also covered in thick camouflaging plastic, giving the impression it will use a quad headlight design. This will not be the case though as the black plastic covering is simply there to confuse onlookers.

Even though the car is covered in a disorienting paint design, the body of the new BMW 3 Series appears to be very crisp and clean cut.

The bonnet line at the front does look a bit suspicious. A completely square bonnet panel is unlikely to be this obvious on the production version.

From the side profile, we can see that pronounced front grille more easily, sprouting forwards at the top.

Under the bonnet is said to be the place that gets the majority of the revisions though. There it will include loads of EfficientDynamics technology. These technologies will include a Stop/Start system, regenerative braking for the mains battery and plenty of aerodynamic aspects helping the car cut through the air.

All these features will help improve the car's overall fuel efficiency. There's also talk of an entry-level three cylinder turbo engine to join the lineup, offering around 120kW of power. A hybrid version of the new car will also join the lineup.

The 2012 BMW 3 Series is expected to go on sale at the end of 2011.
