Renault 4 electric SUV leaked in new patent filings

The high-riding EV will retain the classic silhouette of its namesake.

Design renders for the upcoming retro-styled Renault 4 electric SUV have been revealed, unearthed by Dutch outlet Autovisie.

Sitting on the same CMF-B architecture underpinning the Renault 5 (so far only seen in concept guise), reports suggest the model could be offered with the option of dual motors and all-wheel drive. Meanwhile, battery range will likely extend beyond 300km between charges.

The newest pictures show the Renault 4 will ride higher than the classic model which it is inspired by, but will retain its classic squared-off silhouette.

While the vehicle pictured does look relatively production-ready, Renault's future roadmap unveiled in January suggests a showroom-bound, city-sized, electric Renault 4 wouldn't arrive until 2023, though a launch in 2025 is more likely – too far away for the car's design to even be finalised, let alone have design patents filed.

Instead, it's likely the high-riding city SUV pictured is a concept car set for debut later in 2021, with Renault previously confirming it has a "surprise" in store for the celebration of the original 4L's 60th anniversary this November.

When asked if the vehicle would make its way Down Under, a spokesperson for Renault in Australia told CarAdvice: “We always look at new model variants and consider them for the local market. With that said, we’re currently too far out to make predictions about the 4.”

Earlier this year Renault confirmed plans to introduce 14 new models by 2025, seven of which it claimed would be all-electric.

The original Renault 4 (shown below) – also known as the 4L – was designed in the late 1950s as a direct rival to the then-decade-old Citroen 2CV.

Built between 1961 and 1994, over eight million examples were ultimately sold, making it one the French brand’s most successful nameplates of all time.
