Video: Gran Turismo 5 Nurburging virtual vs reality

By Brett Davis |

Games are becoming fairly advanced these days, almost to the point where you can’t tell the difference between what is real and what is just a game. Here’s a great video showcasing the minimal difference between the same driver taking on the Nurburgring in Germany in a BMW M3 in both real life and on Sony Playstation’s Gran Turismo 5 car game.

The cars tour the 20-plus-kilometre track at almost exactly the same rate, passing roadside features that are practically identical on each screen.

Denis Malevanyi, the driver in both vehicles, decided to conduct the interesting test by editing the two videos together so they were in sync, just to see the difference. But who would have thought they would have remained in sync almost the entire lap?

The only downside to this remarkable resemblance is the sound. You can easily hear the Gran Turismo 5 version and it sounds very digital. Is it that hard to mimic exact sounds of vehicles?

Take a look for yourself anyway, it’s quite interesting to see what computer technology is capable of nowadays.

Sorry but if it’s not available on PC I’m not interested.

    • Robin Graves

Yeah a port to PC would be nice. Live for Speed (not Need for Speed) is a good sim for the PC. Works well with Fanatec or Logitech FFB wheels with a clutch pedal.

    • Hung Low

Your loss I guess! One of the the anticipated racing games in history and your’e not interested….. pffft!

      • MisterMister

Actually, I take back that statement. Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Brothers aren’t available on PC but they’re titles I’m interested in. But they are rare, rare, rare exceptions (I owned a Nintendo before I ever owned a PC, for starters). I’m not interested in PS3 because my PC does everything it does, only much better. Why waste the money?

        • MORECARS

umm ur pc doesn’t do everything ur ps3/xbox does.
cause i dont see u playing GT5 on your pc!

          • RickyC

So you want me to go out and spend hundreds of dollars on a console for one game? lol.

        • Dave S

I imagine that the your PC will need upgrading to play the latest games way before the PS3 does.

I would say most PS3′s brought at launch are still running well, playing the latest games, BD movies and offering 3D support ect. Whereas A PC brought 2007? would have needed several expensive upgrades to keep it playing the latest releases.

GT5 may not be perfect. But it is probally the most detailed and complete car sim out there.

Agreed all the reviews say its the best ON TRACK driving simulator but is let down by poor menus, poor graphics on the standard cars and no brake upgrades..but is the best DRIVING SIMULATOR

          • Tomas79

A game console might not require upgrading, cos the games are severely cut down, to make them fit and play!!

But if you want much better experience, go for the pc games!!!

Better even, go for PC native games!!

  • cd

There was already a BMW M3 Challenge racing game freely available from the BMW website that made a better fist of simulating the M3. It also did a much better job of the sounds, coming very close to the real thing.
It’s PC only – but great fun, and quite realistic. Unfortunately – you can only drive on the Nurburgring GP circuit, unless you apply some 3rd party “tweaks” to add the Nordschliefe.

If you look on YouTube there’s a very similar video from GT5 prologue of the Ferrari F1 car and the real Ferrari F1 car doing identical laps on Suzuka Circuit

  • John Kane

Dude, why would you want it on PC. if you use a PC for racing games you get a real sim like Live For Speed or Iracing… not this kiddy stuff!!
How they can call GT a simulator i have no idea.. its a good simulation of what a computer game would be like to play vs the real deal!

    • Devil’s Advocate

Yeah, GT5 must be ordinary when apparently Kazunori Yamauchi (head of Polyphony Digital) gets requests from manufacturers to plug thier concept car details/parameters into the game’s “physics engine” so they can see how their concept etc would be like to drive. I have ‘played’ GT5 a bit now with a force feedback wheel and while it may not be the best simulator you could get for PC/Console to some people, it is definitely more simulator than arcade game. The handling dynamics are quite accurate with each car having a different personality. If you drive it like an arcade game you will not be very quick at all and spend most of your time off the track in the corners. It is definitely more of a simulator than most.

Because I have invested a lot of money in my PC so I want to make the most of it. Why go out and pay money on a console that duplicates what my PC does? Besides, hooking up a console to a TV is lower resolution than a PC monitor.

      • Devil’s Advocate

That is not always the case as it depends on your PC monitor and TV. My PS3 is displaying higher resolution than both my current laptop and desktop. My PS3 is connected to a 1080p tv (granted not all games are 1080), my laptop is only 768(16in) and 1050(21in) for my desktop (vert lines only). Plus my PS3 is my media streamer, BD/DVD player etc etc. This still works out cheaper than building up a media PC that is wirelessly linked to the internet, can play BDs as well as upscale DVDs and output DTS master audio etc out via HDMI for use in a 7.1 system etc etc. I actually use it more for those things than for games, until GT5 that was!

  • Shak

Seriously, all those people spouting all this negativity about the game, go and play it even just with a handheld controller and if you know even a shred about cars and gaming you come to see that GT5 is the closest you will get to driving a car without actually driving a car. Ok the sound is not up to scratch, but that can sort of be solved with a good surround sound/blu-ray system.

    • Robin Graves

Try LIVE For Speed with a Force Feedback Wheel then you will see the difference.

  • Hung Low

Stupid question, how do you turn off the music whilst racing in GT5?

    • nickdl

Put your own music on! Makes it much better. Otherwise just go to sound options and turn the music volume to 0.

      • Hung Low

Thanks nick, I have only had a couple of hours on it and still cannot locate sound options!

        • V8

yeah mate cos you are hung toooo low

  • Shak

Does anybody know if and how to get the holden cars or even drive them. Also wat about the Supposed preview of the FT86 in the Game?

    • nickdl

Yeah they’ve been really dodgy in that area. Only the VY SS and VY Monaro are available when they come up in the used car dealer. For Ford it’s only the AU V8 Supercar. They’ll probably release an update for $20 with a few Holdens in it.

      • shak

Thanks for that mate. Although im really against Toyota, i would be interested to know if the FT86 is actually in the Game or not?

        • My Cars Called T-Rex

          Theres two types a FT-86 concept 09 and FT-86 Sports concept 2010.

        • nickdl

It is, you can buy it for about 300k or win it in one of those jap car races.
