Volvo’s electric Polestar brand to launch in Australia this year

Polestar – Volvo’s electrified performance division – has announced it will launch in Australia this year.

The model line-up is yet to be confirmed, however the first cars are due in local showrooms during the second half of this year.

The Volvo subsidiary – which is co-owned by Chinese automotive conglomerate Geely – currently produces the Polestar 2 high-riding electric sedan (below). It’s this model that’s expected to spearhead the brand’s Australian launch later this year.

Drive

This car puts out a combined 300kW/660Nm from its dual-motor powertrain, drawing voltage from a 78kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The 0-100km/h sprint is achieved in a claimed 4.7 seconds.

A low-volume hybrid sports coupe – known as the 1 – has been in production since 2017, however it is left-hand-drive only and won’t make it to Australia. Meanwhile, a Polestar 3 performance electric SUV – yet to be unveiled – is expected in 2022, according to overseas reports.

It’ll be followed by a production version of the 2020 Polestar Precept sedan concept.

Pricing is yet to be announced for Australia, however in the US the Polestar 2 is priced from US$61,200 (AU$80,000).

However, US prices include tax incentives which lower the RRP, so prices in Australia could be more than this.
