Opel Insignia Sports Tourer wagons adopted by German police

If the Germans use it, it must be good, right? The country usually adopts a few of its own more obvious marques as patrol vehicles, such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen. But now the country has just ordered a fleet of Opel Insignia Sports Tourer wagons to be used for general duties.

The Opel Insignia - also known as the Vauxhall Insignia and Buick Regal in other markets - was originally designed and made in Germany under the General Motors' European arm, Opel. So it is a German car after all.

The cars will go into service in the state of Hesse, in central-west Germany. There the police have opted to use the Insignia Sports Tourer due to their cheaper purchase prices than the previous, more premium counterparts, while still being locally made.

Up to 800 vehicles are reported to be ordered by the state's police department. With 25 Opel Special Vehicles already delivered (pictured), a further fleet of 75 is said to be in action by the end of the year.

Each vehicle features LED warning lights at the rear, all the usual radio receiving gear capable of tuning into digital and analogue channels, as well as a multifunction rear compartment that can be converted into a canine cage.

It's a great car, the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, and has been praised by many experts around the world and was even awarded European Car of the Year in 2009 for its innovative features, five-star NCAP safety and great range of fuel efficient engine packages.

Plans for a version of the Opel Insignia coming to Australia still haven't been officially confirmed.
