Audi R8 Supercar
September 29, 2006 by Alborz Fallah
When you think of Audi you don’t think of supercars, but I guess it helps to know that the VolksWagen Audi group actually created the worlds best and fastest supercar, the Bugatti Veyron. Yes, its owned by VW/Audi. Anyway, this isn’t regarding the mighty Veyron but instead, the little known Audi R8.

The Audi R8 has:
- a high-revving V8 FSI engine
- quattro permanent four-wheel
- an aluminium body
- and options like adaptive dampers and ceramic brakes.
Audi says that they didn’t skim on costs when it came to the R8, and everything has been designed to ensure optimum driving dynamics. Audi chairman, Ferdinand Piëch, says:
I started it when I returned to Audi as chairman in 2002. I have overseen the design and engineering teams for the past four years. Everyone has been looking forward to this day, the world premiere of our first mid-engined sports car. It is a key moment in the history of Audi.
The waiting is now over! The R8 is on display at the Paris Motorshow. Hope it makes its way down under for the Sydney motorshow!

Way to go AUDI R8!!!!
An awesome car and probably the most succesful example of Audi’s polarising one-piece grill. The lights look mean and cant be mistaken for anything else on the road. From a design perspective they have done a great job
I was fortunate enough to tour the Audi R8 factory in Neckersulm, Germany in June. What a car. It takes over two weeks to pretty much hand build and shares so many Lambo parts including the gearbox. All cars are driven 500 odd kms pre delivery on the Audi test track to ensure all is OK, after a dyna check at 300km/hr. (watched that). Awesome.
That’s waht I like about Audi.. in todays world where nearlty every car looks virtually the same Audi is prepared to do something a bit different.. which is what you want when payig $100k+ for a sports car.
The R8 definitely looks a lot more stylish and futuristic than similar models from its cross-town rivals.
And for the majority of us who probably won’t be able to buy an R8; Audi has been considerate enough to also release the new A5 Coupe which was designed and built using ideas/technology from the Nuvolari [concept car] as well as the R8.
The latest 2008 A4 will be out in the market soon. Preferably, R8 supercar had always been a primary choice, good thing for its innovation.
Wow what a great looking Audi! I hope it has better reliability than my TT. That thing is great to drive, however it’s averaging 2 trips to the dealer every MONTH. Even with the extended warranty covering the cost it’s getting old.
One thing is for sure, what Audi lacks in reliability they make up for in build quality and drivability.
I had the opportunity to drive the R8 in Auckland last weekend courtesy of Giltraps the Audi dealer. What a car it is everything the world’s motoring press has said. I currently own a BMW 650, Porsche Turbo(993) and am delighted that I ordered an R8 at the beginning of the year can’t wait to get mine. I can see how Jeremy Clarkson rated it 6 out of 5, its magnificent.
Best Deposit I ever placed!
Bring it on, Audi! (actually, call, me and I’ll collect!)
LTC
must have really must add to the collection
I just can’t imagine what BMW can come up with having found out how awesome this car from a supposedly lesser brand is.
