“No hoon” car club underway
January 13, 2008 by Karl Peskett
At a meeting at a Holden dealership in WA yesterday, the West Coast Commodore club displayed a selection of member’s cars for the public to inspect.
But what makes this car club different to other clubs is a sense of accountability, and amenability. It simply does not tolerate illegal behaviour from its members.
In a response to a lack of responsibility displayed by other organisations, the West Coast Commodore car club was created to give an outlet to enthusiasts, without the “hoon” tag being applied.
Vice President Aaron Roberts (pictured above) was kind enough to explain to Car Advice what the mentality behind the creation of the club was, and what it means to be a part of it.
“We’re a very family oriented club. You know, we hold a lot of social events. Things like barbeques, supergolf, organising bowling, that sort of thing. We can’t afford to bring the family to where there are idiots,” he said.
On cruise days, the WCC club maintains a close vigil, and is immensely strict about road rules.
“When we create a map for our cruises, we send it off the Police, and it’s registered with them. That way they know exactly where we’re going. Also, at the first meetpoint, we take down all the numberplates of partakers of the cruise. We distribute committee members throughout the cruise, and any illegal activity is noted and then details handed to the Police.”
Mr Roberts was also quick to point out that although the club is strict, it doesn’t mean that fun can’t be had.
“We still get involved in motorsport, so our members can have an outlet too. Drag meetings happen every few months and we do other things as well.”
No stranger to a heavy right foot, his car is a supercharged VX SS Commodore which produces a dynoed 477 rear-wheel kilowatts. Having spent nearly $30,000 on his car on top of the purchase price, Mr Roberts says that all his members are the same, and have a passion for their cars. And that’s what the common thread is.
Having begun nearly a year ago, VP Aaron Roberts and President Phil Holling, created the club with only 8 committee members. It now has nearly 100 paid members, 11 sponsors and is continuing to grow, with new members joining each week. But because of its responsible, yet fair rules, it is gaining more respect in the car scene, and from social organisations.

Excuse me, but why has this guy got the bootlid of his Commodore hinged arse-about-face?
ps. Toyota is a pretty inappropriate anti-spam word for this topic.
Isn’t it obvious.. hes working on turning it into a hard-top convertible like the Mercedes-Benz SLK.. Should look good when it’s finished.
Im all for these, the commodore club in SA is full of hoons, that have many crudies, which is all hooning and dangerous driving. I am a regular at an all american cruise nights held in summer in adelaide, and one of the rules is no hooning, the organises gives all cruise details to the police, and if anyone is coaught hooning, there asked to leave. We get alot of non american cars follow us on these events, and they do burnouts and reckelss behavior, which not only ruins our nigts, but it also means that shopping centre management will not aloow us to use there car parks for future events which makes it unfair for all people who want to have an enjoyable night. Because of this behaviour there is talk at banning cruise nights like this in adelaide. They are only going to allow static nights
Banning Curising would be hard to police.. so much so I don’t think cops would bother.
Not only that – but it’s probably more dangerous to have a group of 10+ guys/girls hanging around a car park or a park standing around talking/drinking etc which leads to boredom and if they’re not allowed to “cruise” they’re more likely to go an wander and damage public and private property.
If you get pulled over for Cruising you could just say that you didn’t see a speed sign / want to break the speed limit or that you are looking for a particular road to go home
A simple way around the Westfield thing is for a group of you to go in [at regular intervals.. and not the same people each time]- visit a few shops then go to the food hall and buy some food then take it out and eat it..that way your on security vido as having been there to shop
or simply say that you’re going to the movies to see [movie] at [time].. but do your research first as to whats on and when
commodore and anti hoon….
now theres an oxymoron.
Ive had commodore drivers with their backwards hats on, try to race me when im on foot!!!
hahaha.yep that has to be the classic of the day.well done!
Sooooooo funny…..
Im still creasing each time I read It!!!!!
ppffttttttt…your joking right….!
On a serious note seems there just trying to get a better name for themselves, cause Holden drivers in hot cars are Hoons in general!!
We do the same in the GT Club meetings…..and fine people for doing burnouts ect..at the same time its tongue in cheek if you leave a meeting without a good performance…..if you try of course! That most have abstaned from now cause their cars are worth too much
Commys Im sorry to say have a bad reputation for trying to nail you around Perth…….why just the sarvo coming back from the beach some Knob in a black GTS Monaro pulled up along side the Cobra trying to have a run with it…….did we bother……..to tell you the truth I thought it was yet another black Commodore in my side mirror!!!!!PPPPPfttt let him go…..Even in the XA GT Coupe that sits at the lights going .blurp…….blurp…..blurp..they still try having a run with it……Now I’m best friends will Wheelnut who is a professed Holden junkie……but Im sure he has experienced the same mentality in Holden drivers! Yes I still love you Wheelnut!
P plates on Commodores should be banned……their bringing the smart high performance Commodore drivers down……
I think we should just start putting our 0-100 sec time on the back window then ya wont bother if your a knob in a Commodore bringing the whole brand down with you……Maaaate!!!!! Grow up their are also other fast cars on the road!
Hey BM, any idea hos long the forum will be down?
Ill sendem an email and let ya know!Privately!!!!!!
Frustrating ha!!!!!
I couldn’t agree with you more BM..
I think the reason you see more hoons in commodores or wannabe HSVs.. is mainly because there are alot of aftermarket performance retaillers selling a wider variety of go fast bits for commodores.. giving owners alot more options as to what they can do to their ride
In a lot of cases the Commodore used to be their parents which meant they had even more money to bolt on a few more go fast bits.
Yet because it’s their first project car and they have very little mechanical nouse; Hoons tend to only focus on the Engine but forgets about the steering or brakes etc.
Unlike a street machiner or enthusiast who plans the project step by step and matches performance of all the components together.. which is why their cars look sounds and perform better
Eventually they end up with a GTS replica and they think because the car looks the same a GTS; it must perform the same as a GTS.. [same goes for those in Pseudo EVOs]
Yey its only when they see the GENUINE Cobra; Monaro; etc disappearing off in the distance that they see how wrong they are. You’d think after infinte number of losses they’d realise this
my advice to hoons is: If at first you don’t succeed give up you don’t want to make a habit of it [Dilbert]
I think you summed it up in the street machiner line Wheelnut………
We tap into areas that normal so called performance enhancers dont….. Plus we prefer to take it to the track if you want to really race! Or throw it on the DYNO…..
Brake burnouts let me tell you….are REALLY PATHETIC!!!!
Maybe someone needs to start a school for 17-21 year olds and teach them what others can, maybe or do have…so the stupidity of HOONS cease!!!!
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Troy,
thats the funniest thing ive heard in a while.
and its funny cause its true!!!!!!!!
ive seen plenty of commy drivers try some funny stuff
ha ha ha race you on foot ha ha ha thats great!!!!!!!!
Wheelnut,
also i dont think holdens marketing helps either. holden have always depicted their cars doing burnouts or with rock music playing.
ford on the other hand doesnt mind showing their vehicles with a family in the car taking a leisurely and comfortable ride
Young people should be banned from RWD cars… its alot easier to lose control in them… and Im not trying to create an argument but its a truth, if you dont know how to handle oversteer you can spin the car in an instant, FWD and understeer is more forgiving for an inexperienced driver.
Go further TP, driver defensive courses should apply as many people have no idea how to drive or control a car if in danger.
I’d tend to agree with that TP. Learners perhaps should be limited to FWD unless they’ve had proper instruction (maybe a course) on how a high-powered RWD handles.
im getting a sticker for my car that says
If you beat me in a race, it proves ONE thing…
U own the second slowest car in town!!!
see how the p plate commo kids react to that one?
Haha, good one Troy. What do you drive, out of curiosity? Please don’t say a $2850 TATA, lol.
i don’t understand why you guys aren’t getting right behind these guys! Your going on and on about how all commy drivers are hoons yet you aren’t recongnising the fact that these guys have recongnised the problems within their own kind and are trying to do something about it. These guys should be commended, not belittled, for what they are trying to acheive.
I for one can really appreciate a well worked holden, and a well worked ford for that matter too, not because i am a hoon, but because i am a car enthousiest who also happens to be extreemly patriotic so can’t help but be excited when someone does something great with our own aussie product.
In saying that though when i owned my commodore i tended to stay away from the commodore and holden clubs because of the wanker element which was involved. I tell ya sometimes at a V8 supercar event i would actually feel embaressed to be wearing a holden shirt while watching some of the behaviour and language of other people wearing the same merchandise…
I think most of us agree Richo. We love our gutsy Ford/Holden/Whatever but can’t stomach the d&*^head element which will always be there.
Not to send anything back on anyones comments here.. but i see just as many D$%kheads in fords and ricers being stupid as commodore drivers.. it’s not limited to one brand here!..
Its comments like “Hoons are mostly driving commodores”, that really shows the maturity of some people here…
I commend this no bs clubs attitude in making a club that is enjoyable to be in while not having to put up with dkheads in any other kind of car, ruining it for everyone else.
I love alot of different brands of Cars in Aus.. and it’s the young immature gotta show off to be popular generation that ruins things for others. not the car brands.
this comment “On a serious note seems there just trying to get a better name for themselves, cause Holden drivers in hot cars are Hoons in general!!”
One of the most immature biased comments ive ever read!.. how bout growing up.. I’d like to see you try to get a decent club going for those who are sick of th sht heads wrecking events for everyone!.. being a commodore club has nothing to do with it!
If no one here can see how people are sick of the bs in the car scene, be it ford, holden, toyota or whatever.. and that people like the WCC are doing something about it in their capacity!,then you shouldnt even be commenting here… and wasting space.
Good on WCC for getting a great club going for those who are sick of the immature bs spurting bstrds out there! and who love to be passionate about enjoying there hobby in cars!
End rant..
thank you richo i would like to say that people will always have there own thoughts on ford, holden ect drivers, however this club i did start dew to the idiots that ar giving commodore drivers a bad name; this club is all about family’s and it is apperant that you guys have not come down to see this, we are together because we love our machines and admire others and for this our members are very happy to find others with the same common intrests without having to go out thrashing our car, as richo has stated we do everything in our power to have a no hoon rule and te club will run with this first and formost, all are welcome to come down and see the cars and meet our members and they you can make up your mind of the mentality of the people in the club to which im sure you will find we are not “HOONS”
thanks to caradvice for the write up and pics as west
coast commodores over the moon with having you come down thanks again and have a happy new year from all of us.
I like the sticker, ” I may be slow, but i’m in front of you”
The only reason this club was started up was to try and get around the tool image of burnout happy moronic drivers in commodores so that they would be taken more seriously. Those commodores arent very interesting, a SS with different rims… wow and a wierd looking boot lid… wow with fully sick subwoofers. Pfft Pleeease.
Could be a way of creating a club that creates the image that their cars have done less burnouts therefore they will ask higher resale values if your part of that club.
hahaha.Im with you!!!!!!!
Who the hell would spend $30k on doing up a Holden…
This guy could have upgraded his Trailer to an RV home with a shower.
Supercujo, your comment has been deleted.
Such statements are unnecessary, and unwarranted. There’s a line, and you crossed it.
Being a member of car clubs can help you through certain underwriters when you are looking to insure your car…
Stan ……to prove my point that “Holden drivers in hot cars are Hoons in general!!” Ill count how times this week one tries to have a run with me in the Cobra…….will get back to you with some numbers.Do you drive anything else?????
We counted 3 idiot P platers in tarted up Commodores fly past us on the Reid HWY yesterday on the way to Hillarys….
Sure I agree there are idiots in any model but the numbers indicate from what Ive seen in driving for over 20 years that in general their in a General!
Congratulations for attempting to change the perception of your type of car club I employ you for it…….I will look out for your decaled members cars and let you know if I see any miss behaving!
Ok Karl, I’ll leave off the extra joke making prose…
Commodore car club people I have found to be a bit weird. They just seem to love a substandard car a bit too much.
is this a breakaway club from commodore car club of w.a. ?
some of the above comments are absolutley ridiculous, these are the perceptions that our club is trying to change but obviously it doesnt matter what we do because some people are too narrow minded to see/feel any different ( seems to be from ford owners too, wonder why that is?? ). some of the comments above, such as those by bavarian missile, keep talking about “p” platers, majority of the club, if not most, are well off there “p’s” so why keep mentioning them?
not all commodore drivers are hoons
Lcat, not exactly, it was started because some of the actions of the commodore car club were not in the intersts of some of the members, therefore went out on their own. not linked to the commodore car club wa at all ( exception being some members are in both )
Chris,
I don’t think your club will change any perceptions. It will take 20 years for opinions to change. Stereotypes are not relevant to the truth, they are there as a general understanding by a collective.
This club is a great idea and will create a great environment for its members though. With a few hundred members your not exactly going to start a cultural revolution…
Chris I made mention that not all Holden drivers are hoons I thought….narrow minded.ppfffttttt as Anthonii mentions in his comments, “Stereotypes are not relevant to the truth, they are there as a general understanding by a collective.”
Its not just Ford drivers on here making reference to the bad
name a lot of Commodore drivers {mostly P platers and modified}seem to have……The P plate statement was made in relation to that they drag Commodore owners down because of what they drive and how they drive….a perception is formed based on that sorry but true!
Look at Jeremmy Clarkson he has a perception that M3 owners
wear suits cool glasses and have an ear piece hanging out of their head when driving….hahaha…..true..naaaaa I don’t wear a suit or have a mobile! See thats perception….
I guess you will be at Whiteman Park Car Show….Along with the other True car enthusiasts ! Will look you up!
I can imagine you will be at Motorvation this weekend too!
This topic was to show that there are (against common belief) car clubs such as WCC which do not promote burnouts, speeding and general “hoon” activity. Instead of this, you have managed to turn it into a whine session (with optional cheese – as let’s face it, we’ve all heard the Pro-Ford-Anti-Holden s%&t before).
It would, in theory be easy enough for people to say “good work, i’m not a Holden fan but i’m glad to see someone trying to do it properly” but instead, people like Minnow, Captain Mainwaring & Elitest start by making snide remarks in regards to cars, or in Elitest’s case, the people who own them. Personally, i’d like to see Elitest repeat his remarks to Aaron’s face, but that’s just me.
We are, as a club aware that we don’t make up 100% of all Holden drivers, and we know and happily admit there are idiots in Holdens/Fords/Nissans/Toyotas/Mitsubishis/etc etc, but we operate in our own way, because it is what we stand for.
I’ve been a WCC member for a while, and i’d like to thank Phil, Aaron and everyone else involved for their great work so far! They have provided a way in which many of us can share our enthusiasm for cars whilst doing it in a way which keeps us safe.
bavarian missile, yes, i will more than likely be at motorvation but not with my car.
i drive two different types of commodores and i am a car enthusiast, have been since i could walk, always will be. i am not however a “hoon” and do not want to be lumped with the label.
Chris: I don’t think BM was calling you a Hoon.. it’s just that these days there are a number of people who prefer to categorise/classify people based purely on: their characteristics; where they live and what they drive.
and it’s mainlty due to the Media..
When theres a report of a young male teenager involved in an accident.or caused an accident after taking part in a street race. Because the Media isn’t allowed to be more specific by saying John Howard a 18 year old Unemployed from [wherever] of {whatever] nationality/decent whose parents are…etc They generalise and call him a hoon – a punchy phrase [created by them] to describe such behaviour
Then because the media realise there is no way of controlling these morons they focus on the car.,
The media are very specific about make model and speeds etc
and they put so much focus on the car that People start to think that anyone with a car like that is an idiot or a bad driver.
Not realising that the Hoon is only a rogue element of the car scene where as the majority of them are tradies or professionals in tbeir 30-40s who have not only developed a brain but put so much time and money into building/restoring their project car that to most Racing it or doing Burnouts is out of the question
Unforunately though [like with most things] its a case of the minority ruining it for the majority. and it’s something we enthusiasts have to live with
perhaps active disciples of anti-hoonery deserve a name to help promote the cause.
‘Hoon-nots’ any other suggestions?
I can’t understand why some comments on here are just a blatant have a go at this club.. their doing what others would love to have in a club, which is enjoy a hobby in cars, free of immaturity and idiocy..
Articles like this are written so that others can read about what is going on in their community/city/street, and what have you..to see that people are putting the effort in to make the enjoyments of cars fun for all and without lude behaviour . This article is not put up to brag that their better than evry other club.. what nosense!.. if users here feel the need to have a go at the article about a club doing there best to enjoy there hobby in cars without the bs!.. then you’re no better than those the WCC are trying to keep out of this club!.. id like to commend the WCC for not taking any bs and trying to enjoy their cars wihtout having to brag about it to anyone!..
Everyone has their own taste in cars and hobbies.. and whether or not someone spends 30k on a holden or a ford or a mitsubishi.. its up to them. If you think they shouldn’t have then there’s no need to stir sht here about it… see how hard it is even to keep the bs outa this comments area.. let alone the car scene..
Can’t stand those who like to stir the pot so to speak…
Grow up enjoy you car/s and think before you speak/act!
Stan…..mate if you read my comments and some others no where am I bagging your club!
P platers and some Commodore drivers yes…..but not your club sorry!
Chris why aren’t you taking your car????? Your club on display there at least?
How about NOOH [hoon backwards].. so when someone asks you are you a HOON? you [as a car enthusiast] can say NOOH!
hahaha…..your normal witty self!
this was not aimed at you bavarian it’s ok ;).. i think their ill always be immature p platers and even some off the p plates who shouldnt be driving! becuase of dangerous behaviour on the road.. just have to try an ignore them if possible.. or report them, as this club does!
PS lets not waste space on useless posts ay fellas!
Stan. Its not useless banter, theres points to be made. I think wherever you get cars together in unofficial gatherings they’ll be hoons about whether directly involved or not.
Commodores are highly affordable, somewhat culturally attached, and in higher numbers than most cars on the road, hence the proportion of ‘wanker commodore drivers’ is higher.
For all that said and done, I see plenty of the exact same wankers in late model Falcons and any number of turbo and non turbo Japanese imports. The car itself means nothing. The attitude propagates to whatever car, no model automatically creates a wanker.
And who on earth gets annoyed at kids who put bodykits/styling/performance parts on their cars? That’s passion, something places like this encourage not matter what a person drives.
Its not passion, its called “bad taste”… Like when people put dimsims in a roll, sure it tastes good but its just plain wrong…..It just izzzzzz….. *Clarksons voice
BM, my car is in a panel shop being repainted etc, has been since september, thats why its not at MV, if it was out of the shop then it would have been there,i was hoping it would have been but no chance now.
thanks go to Stan for the good words, well said
No Name – granted there will always be hoons.. but these guys who are sick of them and are making their own “official” club to stay away from the so called “hoons” should be recognised.. so that others can see whats happening and even join up if so desired! not many know theres clubs where you can enjoy an event without having to worry about spoons being stupid.
WCC Is properly Incorporated and growing like a wild fire! all good fellas trying their hardest to weed out the bs!..
This is not an article to stir up any great debates , but one to let people know of a commodore enthusiast club that they think people should know about.. holden just seems to be the type of car being used in this case.
And yes i do recognise people like to debate everything in the world even to extremes.. i do think the discussion should be kept to questions on how the clubs going & about keeping the hoon factor out of it and or how can people learn more about them if so interested.. but thats my opinion :).
Elitist – if you did some mods to your car that you loved and people bagged you for not being tastefull to them how could you ever be individual.. trying to conform to the norm here are we?
Hi everyone
It looks like this story has created a lot of feedback, some good, some bad and some that is not related at all!
Basically the club was started with the intention for all to enjoy the networking, socialising and friendship with others that also have like passion for the Holden Commodore. Some have cars that are purpose built for show, some for the track, some purely because they love to go cruising, and some because they want to meet others to get ideas on how to either build up their commodore, or learn from more experienced commodore drivers how to handle their vehicle on the track.
WCC has been operating for just shy of 12 months, and with nearly 100 members it is gaining a lot of respect in the community as a club that rejects any sort of HOON behavior on club events (as that is what the track events are for!!)
I thank Karl for the write up of our club and the story on the club show and shine at one of our sponsors Gibbons Holden, and would also like to thank everyone that has had positive comments to make about our club.
For those of you that have posted up unfavourabe comments about our club, ues you are entitled to your comments, but as I always say ‘each to their own’, because WCC is for the passionate Commodore drivers and all the members actually enjoy the club. It is a club for the members to enjoy their hobby in a safe environment, anyone trying to change that by misbehavingin a HOON manner will be reported and asked to leave immediately!
So if anyone would like to chat further to myself they can email the club a westcoastcommodores@gmail.com and I would be pleased to answer any questions people may have.
Anyway, enough said for now!
Regards
Phil
WCC President
Elitist to quote your words “Who the hell would spend 30k on a holden” i would and hve done many time and will do it plenty more personal attacks on me just shows you do not now me at all nor do you know much this commodore was not built to look like a show car it is my every day driver, i also own a fully restored 48-215, fj vk grpA brock HQ prem station wgn 56 chev and a few others which are all in very good to mint condition, cars are my hobbie!and it is what i do instead of taking drugs ,drinking or robbing little old ladies, i work very hard for my money and i will do with it as i please.
first and foremost thanks for the writeup it is always good to get exposure..and as they say any publicity is good publicity ..although it would be great if ppl would at least appreciate this club writeup etc for what it is….if you dont like the policies story etc move on ..get a job and stop wastin your precious time making comments that dont really add any sense of constructive critisism…i am sure that like myself…(one of the earliest members) many of our members would be more than happy to invite you along to a cruise so that you can actually have first hand experience with the club rather than make assumptions from a couple of wonderful paragraphs and photos…i know everyone is entitled to their opinion and this is mine..i dont see the point in talkin sh*t about ppls choices as they are just that…other ppls choices..live your life the way you choose drive the car you choose act the way you choose and hopefully it all goes smoothly…rather than bitch about what someone else has chosen to do drive and be….
at the end of the day im a big believer in leading by example and i admit i like enjoying my car now and then after all thats why i build them…but i as a member of several car clubs and forums can appreciate other ppls tastes etc even if i dont like it..and i CHOOSE not to judge someone by any other means than their ACTIONS enjoy cars or not your choice act like a muppet and rubbish someone from the comfort of your chair without knowing any background make yourself feel all warm and fuzzy and special and warmin the cockles of your own palms ppl and ppl will bite…one of the things i miss from pre intraweb days…before it was popular you had to have the balls to tell someone to their face….
please feel free to experience the club first hand before making accusations etc even if you arent a fan of the commodore in general i am pretty ure that everyone in the club has owned or enjoyed at least one other type of vehicle..come along then make a call from experience
end rant
