Back to the Future DeLorean DMC-12 replica

There must be a disruption in the space-time continuum, because a time-travelling DeLorean has appeared around five years early and slightly further north than it was supposed to.

Either that, or it could be that 31-year-old Burlington, Ontario resident, Ken Kapalowski, has built his own replica of the famous gullwinged Back to the Future time-traveller out of complete obsession with the 1980s film trilogy.

The Toronto Star reports that Mr Kapalowski – part Doc Emmett Brown-style mad scientist, part smooth-moving Marty McFly wannabe – purchased his 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 around 10 years ago, and has spent the past six years fitting it out to look exactly like the movie car.

Claiming to have watched all three films more than 100 times each, Mr Kapalowski has spent around $25,000 and innumerable hours on his obsession, which is still not complete.

The flux capacitor is there, but whether it provides the necessary 1.21 gigawatts when the car reaches 88mph to allow time travel is unconfirmed. (It also features a fusion generator however, so energy shouldn’t really be an issue.)

Earlier this year, Mr Kapalowski and his DeLorean joined a 25th anniversary Back to the Future cast reunion in New York, rubbing shoulders Marty McFly himself (Michael J. Fox) and others.

Determined to use the time machine for good and not evil, Mr Kapalowski raises money from public appearances with the DeLorean for the Michael J. Fox Foundation and Team Fox to help the fight against Parkinson’s disease.

The DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) built approximately 9000 DMC-12s between January 1981 and December 1982 and sold them for $US25,000 (around $60,000 today). It is believed as many as 6500 of the original vehicles are still on the road.
