Video: Rhys Millen Climb Attack drift in 560kW Hyundai Genesis Coupe

By Brett Davis |

Rhys Millen, Formula D and D1 Grand Prix champion, recently drove a fully-fledged Hyundai Genesis Coupe up the Peaks Hill Climb in a record time for a rear-wheel drive to demonstrate the Hyundai’s capabilities. More recently though, he’s been putting together a small drift film that comprises of driving completely sideways up a mountain in Serra do Rio do Rastro, Brazil.

First there was a teaser video, and then there was this. There’s no words needed, really. The car is a Hyundai Genesis Coupe drift car capable of destroying rear tyres in 560kW-flexes of the right ankle. It’s great to see a Hyundai being used for all types of motorsport, check it out below.

We need more mountain roads like that

Why does the driver always use the clutch when it appears that he has not changed a single gear. Is this a technique in drifting?

Some drift drivers like to use the clutch to skid the rear wheels to initiate a slide – compression lockup – instead of using the handbrake. They also ‘pop’ the clutch during acceleration to initiate or maintain wheelspin.

so for the purpose of speed up that road, would you be faster drifiting like this video or not drifting, more of a rally car style drive. Just interested to know, thnx.

      Hi bob,
In terms of speed, it is a lot faster to drive with minimal friction between the wheels and the road surface – in most circumstances anyway. This video is simply a demonstration of drifting; a style of driving whereby smoke and sliding are priority over outright pace.

Not as Fast but a whole lot more fun…
