Formula 1 car on the streets of Perth

In the lead up to Sunday's Australian Festival of Speed, a Formula 1 car has been let loose on the main street of the Perth foreshore, Riverside Drive.

At lunch-time, police blocked off the intersection of Barrack Street and Riverside Drive, just near the Swan Bell tower, and cleared the road. Daniel Ricciardo, the young gun currently testing with Red Bull Racing, took to the street.

While police insisted on the 60km/h speed limit, their eyes were opened wide when Ricciardo blitzed the road, laying huge black strips. The second run was cancelled when pedestrians got too close and stepped out onto the road - disappointing all concerned.

However, for anyone hanging on to the old "Perth is such a boring place to be", it's clear the Festival of Speed has changed all that.
