2011 Audi A4 2.0 TDI e more fuel efficient

Audi Australia has announced fuel efficiency gains for the 2011 Audi A4 2.0 TDI e, with a combined consumption rating set to rival the most frugal offerings in the country.

Consumption from the 100kW/320Nm 2.0-litre diesel will drop 0.2 litres/100km to just 4.6 litres/100km when the updated model is released in February next year. CO2 emissions are also set to decrease from 124g/km to 120g/km.

The savings are achieved thanks to a lowered ride height and aerodynamic tweaks to the body to improve the drag coefficient. All the gear ratios of the six-speed manual transmission have been lengthened, and the tyres have been optimised to offer low rolling resistance.

The onboard computer also features an efficiency program, which gives the driver tips on fuel-efficient driving and ideal shift times.

Despite the changes, the TDI e maintains its 9.5-second 0-100km/h acceleration ability and has a top speed of 215km/h.

Although it trails vehicles like the Ford Fiesta Econetic, MINI Cooper D, Toyota Prius and the Volvo C30 1.6 DRIVe (which all have a combined fuel consumption of less than 4.0 litres/100km), the 2011 Audi 2.0 TDI e will be more fuel efficient than the likes of the smart ForTwo and the Suzuki Alto, and most importantly, its European competitors: the Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY (6.3 litres/100km) and the BMW 320d Lifestyle (5.3 litres/100km).
