2008 Saab 9-4x Concept
January 9, 2008 by George Skentzos
Car maker’s are finally getting the hang of designing attractive SUV’s – even Swedish manufacturer Saab has produced a stunner with its new 9-4x Concept vehicle.
This crossover concept is expected to closely resemble the production version due for release in 2009.
“We focused on incorporating design themes from the Aero X in a crossover execution, adding functional, lifestyle features to support the activities of customers using this type of vehicle,” Anthony Lo, GM Europe’s Director of Advanced Design
Flexfuel is the new hybrid, with the 9-4x Concept running a 2.0L ‘BioPower’ turbocharged engine that develops an impressive 224kW and 400Nm when used with E85 fuel mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The concept utilises the Saab XWD (”cross wheel drive”) all-wheel-drive system which incorporates an electronic rear limited-slip differential (eLSD).

Doesn’t look too bad. As long as it’s not yet another clone of the Holdenwoo Captiva maybe Saab has a future after all.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmMMMMMmmmMMMMMMMMMmMMMMm……
Looks pretty good,
not really a fan of the rear side windows though, sort-of have a Ssangyong aura about them…
Sorry to say it Captain, but I reckon this is a Captiva clone.
Really nice looking car, although after owning 5 Saabs in the past, i will never ever own one again. After 3 years, they just shYte themselves.
Looks very cool indeed, especially the interior. No sign of Captiva here. And hey, the Captiva ain’t bad, especially the Maxx version.
Not at all ugly.
Anthony Lo was awarded ‘asian designer of the year’ 07
Lo was also heavily involved in the earlier alliance between subaru/saab. Maybe this what the new forester should have looked like!
just another oversized ill conceived road tank which looks pretty much the same as anything else in this class and will just be getting in my way and blocking my view. X5 is still the class act in this segment. And the non existent resale value of SAAB vehicles will just make the owners cry. I once approached SAAB about buying a car and even when they offered me an 80K car for 60K drive away (brand new no more to pay), I could not bring myself to purchase one. SAAB will offer you virtually anything for you to buy a car, and that is why their resale values (on the ticketed price) are so low.
THE AWD system under the Saab is similar to Subarus Symmetrical AWD system.
Because when GM-Saab first toyed with the idea of an AWD Cross-over they apparently used a Liberty as the basis for the prototype – as the overall dimensions are [almost] the same..
If so the next step would be to fit it under the TT-36 Torana or the VE SV6/ SS Commodore.
The Journos will have you believe this is built on a captiva.
It is not. The 9-4x will use an new platform called TE. Speculate all you wish but you can’t build a Captiva on TE.
I guess Saab’s XWD system is similar to Subaru’s as GM had the chance to benchmark it. But Saab engineers will tell you that this Co. developed HALDEX Gen. V edition is better.
