Toyota LandCruiser clocks 1,000,000km

By Brett Davis |

A Toyota LandCuiser 80-Series has just clocked over one million kilometres on the same, original engine. The owner says he bought the car at 132,000km 10 years ago and has since fitted an LPG system and driven it an additional 868,000km.

The car is used by Collin Muddle to transport caravans from Melbourne up to Brisbane, where he lives. He says the car has practically been driving non-stop the entire time, although he took some time out during his deliveries to take some photos of the one million click-over moment. Muddle says,

“I’ve never had to do a lot of work on the LandCruiser – the only work has been superficial stuff. The gearbox, diff and transfer case – I’ve never had a fault. I change the oil and filter every 10,000km and rotate the tyres every 20,000km.”

The car has been a loyal part of the family, Muddle says, even his pet dog likes it because of the pop out windows. Muddle says he would like to keep the car for much longer and would like to replace the engine at some stage.

    Wow, a 80 series Landcruiser with 0km!

It’s impressive but my dad had an old Nissan 6 cylinder. Drove it 800,000km before the odometer broke. Then drove it about half that much again before he got rid of it.

    SO ~ 1.2million k’s.

That’s nothing. My mum had a Kia 4 cylinder. Drove it for 500,000 km before the odometer broke. Then drove it about double that much again before she got rid of it.

So ~ 1.5 million k’s. Better believe it’s true, coz I wrote it so.

        crap

Are you kidding, my V240′s odometer broke at 3000k’s and I reckon it’s already done FOUR times that. That’s not good, it’s great!

Wow a nissan with 1.2million on it!

It’s impressive but my dad has a 60series 2H with 3 million on it, its true because i said so!

Congratulations, this Lancruiser has just joined the elite rank shared by Falcon LPG taxis for the last 20 years. Big acheivment. :/

    • Stoney!

Rarely do taxi’s get near 1,000,000 k’s before they get rid of them, it’s nothing but a myth…

      Stoney!

I’ve seen a few on eBay with near enough to 1,000,000km. But it could have been in private hands since.

LOL at the sealed beam headlights. 1940s technology… even the US model LandCruiser got composite headlights (and they were the ones who introduced/mandated sealed beams in the first place).

    • CJ

Sorry MrMr, they have Quartz Halogen inserts

      • MisterMister

I wasn’t referring to the type of lighting technology used. Obviously they are halogen, but rather to the construction of the headlight itself. Sealed beams are very old fashioned and are no longer found on any modern cars. The 80-Series Landcruiser was the last to use them (100-Series onwards used composites). The embarassing thing though is that other markets got the composites on the Landcruiser (we also did on the Sahara model only).

he’d be one satisfied customer. good onya. i had a corolla panel van KE26 back in 1974 and it had 728,000 ks (2 engines though) on it by the time it died.

  • Old Dog

    90000 k’s a year is pretty impressive

  • Samson

Ive been in Falcon taxis with over that amount, except the Falcon is in horrible stop start city traffic… and is been driven by many drivers who dont own or care about the car… Anything which can survive in those conditions is doing really really well.

“I’ve never had a fault” Be he has replaced nearly every major component. Even the engine looks to be replaced.

    • pg

I think you may have mis-read that.. punctuation could have better though

      • John

        Nope, it clearly states it.

    • Devil’s Advocate

Have you ever heard of “preventative maintenance” John? People do replace components before they “may” give trouble, especially with a guy who does this as you don’t want it breaking down whilst driving up the middle of the Newell. However I am not saying this is the case with this example.
Personally after reading it a couple of times I am with PG on this one. I interpret it as he has only had to work on superficial stuff. Then with a completely new sentence he says he has “never had a fault” with the main drivetrain ie gearbox, transfer case and diff. Don’t forget that bit is a quote and you can just imagine the interview where he is counting off the major mechanical compenents on his fingers and saying, “gearbox, transfer case, diff [pause] never had a fault”.

The first time I read it I thought he had changed those components, however after reading it a couple more times to me it seems like he was just highlighting that those components haven’t had any faults.

Also, how does the engine “look to be replaced”? There is no picture etc! Even the first sentence says “…clocked over one million kilometres on the same, original engine.”

    Boring job…

    • DGS

….. Far more exciting to sit in an office cubical all day shuffling paper. Who would want to be cruising the country highways with the all that fresh air and wide open space?

    • nickdl

I just meant you’d get sick of that highway after the 500th time up and back… Especially if you’re sitting on 90 towing a caravan.

  • Bundy

Would b a bugger if the camera or the photos didn’t work…..…and u could sell the car with low k’s on the clock…………lol

  • anthony

i recall reading abou ta guy who uses a 40s series landcruiser as an outback roadside assist guy with 2million K on a 2h diesel… very good engines :)

My dads got a 94 VS Commodore Executive Wagon 2-3 years ago with over 400,000km’s on it. The odometer has stopped on 456,466, but my dad’s done about 50,000km since that, so it’s done over half a million km’s & it’s still going strong. Go HOLDEN!

  • Zej

My BMW 528i had 390’000kms on the original motor, and my dearly departed Range Rover had 386’000 earlier this year until it was written off by hail. Both going strong and hitting the redline every day.
Any well designed car SHOULD be able to clock 500’000kms if well taken care of. The fact that someone actually bothers to do so (let alone 1’000’000kms) is an achievement in itself. Personally, I think that there are too many interesting cars out there to keep the same one for 10^6kms unless it’s out of pure necessity.
