Iranian President auctioning his 1977 Peugeot 504

Ever wanted to own a car that was driven by a president? Here’s your chance.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is auctioning his 1977 Peugeot 504 to raise money for charity.

The 33-year-old, white 504 (officially registered in Mr Ahmedinejad’s wife’s name) was apparently the president’s source of pride for many years, using it as the family drive.

The vehicle is also well known among many Iranians, as the Mr Ahmadinejad used it during the 2005 election campaign to gain support from the battlers of Iranian society.

The money raised from the sale of the car will go towards the Mehr Foundation – a government program designed to help poor families in Iran find housing solutions.

An increase in real estate prices, especially in the capital Tehran, as well as a housing shortage has compounded the problem recently.

In February, Iran’s housing minister said around one million citizens were eligible for support from the program.

Iranian welfare minister Sadik Mahsoul said the Peugeot would be sold at an international auction, with the bidding details to be released soon.
