Infiniti Essence at LA Auto Show

We’re far removed from the global debut of the Infiniti Essence—that took place at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show almost two years ago—but the luxury division of Nissan continues to feature this gleaming concept car at every possible turn. No wonder: The thing is absolutely gorgeous in the flesh.

Designed to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Infiniti, the Essence is a hybrid sports coupe with a powertrain featuring an electric motor linked to a twin-turbocharged 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine; combined output for the two mills is estimated at 442 kW. The rear-wheel drive coupe also features a twin-clutch 6-speed automated manual transmission.

Visually, the Essence showcases some truly striking elements: the chrome-like finish, full-length glass roof, aeronautics-inspired gauge set and three-piece Louis Vuitton luggage set custom-fit for the cargo area. Regrettably, the manufacturer has revealed no plans to transform this into a production car, but design cues from the Essence have already begun to appear in other Infiniti vehicles.

The press materials from the Geneva launch of the Infiniti Essence include the following line: “Capable of vast speeds where conditions allow, zero emissions where they don’t.” Brilliant.

Nissan's luxury brand is expected to launch in Australia in the next 2 years.
