2011 Chevrolet Camaro convertible coming to Australia
The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro convertible could be in Australia within six months, according to American vehicle importer Performax International.
The soft-top Camaro was unveiled at this week’s Los Angeles Auto Show and is set for release in the US next February.
The Queensland-based importer launched the world’s first right-hand drive Camaro coupe early this year and is planning to bring in a prototype for conversion as soon as possible.
Performax has confirmed it will offer the Camaro in the range-topping 2SS specification, which is powered by GM’s 318kW LS3 V8 engine and is teamed with a six-speed manual transmission.
A six-speed automatic version with the 300kW L99 V8 engine with active fuel management will also be available.
Standard features on both models include Brembo high-performance brakes, Pirellli P Zero tyres wrapped around 20in alloys, leather seats and a Boston Acoustic audio system.
The soft-top opens and closes in 20 seconds, while Chevrolet says the convertible version has retained the Holden-designed suspension settings from the coupe, as well as its handling dynamics.
Performax International general manager, Glenn Soper, said the company was keen to produce a prototype for Australian Design Rule approval.
“As Performax International produced what we believe was the world's first right-hand drive Camaro coupe and has built many examples since for Australian customers, we expect this will be a straightforward process without undue delay," Mr Soper said.
"The last Camaro convertible was launched in 1994, so not surprisingly there's very strong buyer interest in this new model – even more so because it's such a beautiful looking car.”
