Tata Nano gets free safety option, no recall, after investigation into fires

Indian manufacturer Tata Motors maintains that its Tata Nano – widely known as “the world’s cheapest car” – does not need to be recalled, despite a number of instances of fires.

Tata revealed that a second analysis of the $2500 car, conducted in September and October by a team of internal and international experts, concluded that the incidents were specific to the vehicles and were not related to the Nano’s overall design.

“The Tata Nano is a safe car with a robust design, state-of-the-art components and built with an uncompromising attention to quality in all aspects,” Tata Motors said in a statement.

“Customers can rest assured that there are no generic defects in the Tata Nano.”

Indian business newspaper The Economic Times reported that fires have affected at least seven vehicles so far.

Tata said its investigation revealed instances of additional foreign electrical equipment having been installed and foreign material being left in the exhaust system, and believes these may be linked to the fires.

Despite this, Tata is now offering the Nano with an improved safety system, designed to provide additional protection in the exhaust and electrical systems.

Tata confirmed the safety option would be available to all of the Nano’s 70,000 owners free of charge.
