January 5, 2008 by Matt Brogan

One day short of kicking off the world famous Dakar rally comes news that it has been cancelled due to an unspecified terrorist threat.

In the interest of competitor safety, race organisers and the French Government took the dramatic step of calling off the two week marathon but were quick to stress that this would not endanger the future of the event.

Further details are unavailable at this time but as always, we’ll keep you posted.

Oh no, I saw a preview on SBS and it not going to happen. What kind of terrorist threat is stopping it? Did they get a threating mesage?

Difficult but smart move – a major incident could have killed it forever. (Mauritian terrorists killed 4 tourists on xmas eve and have directly threatened the rally)

They should turn the rally into a “death race 2000″ style event with high powered weaponry mounted on the bonnet, and support staff dressed in mad max garb.

Well technically a terrorist event can happen anywhere, so what, people gonna hide under the bed? Sounds like politics to me.

Why wasn’t it cancelled right after Sept 11? 2001? 2002? When terrorism was peaking? Why 2008? War on Terror not working eh? Sounds like a complete load!!!

The participants would probably have a greater chance of dying from a crash or some other racing related incident rather than from a terrorist attack.

they dont race in a group where they could all be attacked at once anyway.

Huh, who is really kidding here? Mauritian ‘terrorists’ who’ve travelled all the way from their tropical Indian Ocean island to go and kill rally participants in the North African desert?
