2008 Kia Borrego preview

January 3, 2008 by Matt Brogan

Set to be unveiled later this month at the Detroit Motor Show, the all new Kia Borrego is the largest SUV yet produced by the Korean manufacturer, dwarfing both the Sportage and Sorento.

Though unconfirmed for Australian release, the Borrego is based (loosely) on Hyundai’s now outdated Terracan’s ladder type chassis and will be sold in many guises internationally including Mohave in South Korea.

Powered by a choice of either 3.8-litre V6 (as seen in Granduer) or the all new Tau 4.6-litre V8 (as will be seen in Hyundai’s Genesis), the Borrego certainly won’t want for power, though the economy stakes may suffer with no diesel planned at this stage.

A versatile seven seater with conservative and practical styling, the Borrego aims to increase awareness of Kia’s market position and further broaden the 2008 range with both Borrego and Cee’d joining the line-up.

It’s rumoured that Borrego will make an appearance at Australian motor shows  this year.

  2. Matt says:

Hey F-O, wasn’t Preggio the one with brake issues?

  3. Frugal One says:

    Matt, 100% correct.

Series 1 was recalled to have a mod. done to brakes.

Series 2 has improved brakes and is what i drive [2004], the brakes *just* pass ADR comp. for stopping performance.

The pedal is soft and travels LONG way towards the carpet before it starts to bite and stop.

Its going latter in the year, getting a all new Hyundai TQ? Van, soon as they hit the wharf [April?]

Req. rear barn doors and auto-tranny.

All in all the Bongo [Pregio] has been ok, never broke down or let me down…BUT watch the brakes, NEVER pull in front of one at traffic lights, u have been warned! :-)

    Cheers

It reminds me of the facelifted verison of the Tribute.

  7. HOT 4wd…seems like Hyundai-Kia link is great and changing landscape and will effect Toyota and others….. Toyota mainly. LOOK OUT AS HYUNDAI i30 ALREADY AHEAD ON TOYOTA ON RELIABILITY AND QUALITY AND STORMING AHEAD IN US. IT IS EASY TO GET TO TOP OF TREE AND HARDER TO STAY THERE!

it from the front does remind me of the ssuburu foester [2009] to bad subby didnt actually do this it is so much more refined looking but ladder body chasis is a little outdated as long as its ig looking has 16 litre fuel consumption and a crappy interior the americans will buy it in droves
