Ah yes.. but seals are quicker and more manouvreable in water than we are.
Which is why there are so many shark attacks .. when we’re wearing a wetsuit we look like a seal.

A Shark is like a V8.. A seal is like an Evo.. whereas we’re more like a Reliant.. therefore easier to catch

Solution: Wetsuits should be Atomic Green or Acid Rush not Black

I know it is the traditional grille of the BMW, though like the Alfa. Its UGLY, atleast in my opinion.

Don’t worry Ivan, I am not trying to. I am more comparing the ‘characteristics’ that the company build into the engine. Honda have always had a habit of making screaming high end engines that are no different to the normal one at lower RPM. BMW’s philosophy seems to be more geared towards increasing low/mid torque than high end power in the ‘normal’ non-M engines. Even the baby 6s have a decent bottom end. I used to own a BMW 6 cyl and when they added VANOS to that model (E36 325), the max power/torque didn’t change however the bottom end was much stronger with better economy in everyday driving. To me that makes much more sense for everyday driving because seriously how often do you spend above 5500rpm??!! Honda use awesome technology in these engines, it is just a shame you only use it a small percentage of the time in the real world.

I would agree that the Honda engines really lack the torque, especially in low revs. I myself haven’t driven an M badge BMW, but I wouldn’t mind trying out this 1 series, since this is the only one I would afford =P

I realise that everybody is different, because I like the idea of a Vtec where there is low fuel consumption if driven normally, but there is high power in higher revs to overtake, just shift down 1 or 2 gears and vroom….

Please, don’t compare a 2ltr 4cylinder and a V8.

Sorry no name, I am someone different!!

Speaking of oil burners my parents purchased a Mazda 3 2.0 Turbo Diesel a couple of months ago. I ended up taking it for a drive over the xmas break and was quite impressed. Once off the mark it would eat the petrol 2.0 for breakfast. Cruising at highway speeds you would never know there is a diesel up front except for the fact that it eats up steep hills and spits them out the back without a single drop in rpm/speed (only 1700 at 100km/h) whilst burning well under 6L/100km. Not a bad car and it perfectly suits my parents (read not hoons and lots of country driving).

Elitist – if the japanese really took the diesel thing serious i’m sure they could whip the germans butts. The Euro Honda Accord has a 2.2 diesel engine and is has awards for being the best diesel. Its not the most powerful nowadays but still an ace to drive apparently.

I wouldn’t say BMW make the best diesel but they take it seriously.

The japs can bring this down but not right away, it takes a few years.

BM is that you playing Devils Advocate. YOur right about Hondas complete lack of torque. Yep revvy engines but day to day torque engines are more easier to live with. Thats why diesels are the way to go. What diesel cars has just tested the 118d coupe in the UK better and faster than the 2.0petrol. But way too expensive at £nearly $60K

You are right about the S2000 etc Ivan, however the Honda engines lack something that the BMW engines have. That my friend is torque. The Honda V-tec engines have heaps of power with not much torque, especially in the lower rev ranges. A bigger problem is you have to rev the bejesus out of it to get that power. Anything below 5300-5500 (usual v-tech change over point) they are a fun free zone with performance not much different to the everyday model. How often do you drive above 5500rpm on your everyday drive to work/shops etc? The BMW engines on the other hand produce the high specific powers with oodles of torque down low. In the case of the BMW M3 V8, 90% of maximum torque is on tap from only 1800 rpm and doesn’t drop below that until well over 6500rpm. Try that in your Honda V-tech engines.

I am not knocking Honda’s engines as IMHO they make some of the best engines out there just as the worlds largest engine manufacturer should. However as good as they are, the high specific power car engines are all top end and not much else.

Its actually referred to as the kidney grille and has been a BMW design trait pretty much since the mid 1930s – as featured on the BMW 319/1 town car.

Except for the new 6 Series coupe and 7 series sedans ["Bangles Bungles"]

compared ot its rivals the 3 and 5 series are awesome.. I don’t even mind the 1 series [coupe] sure they may look a bit sedate but as BM sauys in terms of performance handling and Power to weight ratio hardly anything else can match it particularly in terms of sheer driving pleasure.. M M M !!

Yep your right Ivan…………..they are great little cars can you think of anymore though.

I don’t think their cheap in there own right though are they?

Do you know that in 2006 only 30 S200 were sold in Australia….is there a reason for that that you know of?

I still think the Z4 would out sell it world wide…even though its ugly as sin. Give me a Z8 thanks!

BMW still are the masters though……especially in their M stuff! You cant deny that…..as far as reliability I have said it before I haven’t had that many problems with any of the 6 I have had over 20 years! But I’m sure some do…..everyone has issues at sometime especially when companies start grow fast.Look at Toyota!

BM, about that 100hp per litre, you’re forgetting the Honda S2000, who has been doing it since 1999.

In fact, I’d rather get a Honda S2000 instead of this BMW. It’s overpriced, not as reliable as Honda and hot as sporty (in shape).

As has been said.. Bmw’s twin turbo engine is awesome. It won best engine in its class at the same time as vw’s 1.4litre twincharge engine and audi’s 2.0litre turbocharged engine won their respective classes. As BM said, BMW will probably win best engine in class with the newest v8 also..

Japan do a bloody good job too though i must say and they are more affordably priced but you cant take away from BMW’s expertise when it comes to engines..
