2013 BMW Project i Vision EfficientDynamics coupe to hit production

According to reports, BMW will be producing the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept we first saw at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009. It is planned to be called the BMW Project i and should be in the showroom by 2013. BMW has also apparently leaked plans for an M version of the coupe concept, which could be called the BMW M1.

The first 'un-M' version of the coupe will be powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine and two electric motors. It doesn't sound all that enticing but the combination is said to produce between 230 and 265kW of power - okay for a sporty coupe, but it's not sensational, until you take a look at the torque on offer. Up to 800Nm is said to be available, mainly thanks to the relentless electric motors.

Reports say the car will be able to crack the 0-100km/h sprint in around five seconds. The best element to the car though will be the potential fuel economy; 4L/100km is expected. It should be extremely light weight as well, which will help with performance and economy. Body panels will be made from carbon fibre as will most of the chassis.

German motoring publication, Autobild, says to expect a limited production of the BMW Project i, suggesting around 5000-10,000 units in total. BMW has even released a typical BMW teaser video of the concept driving under its own power to build anticipation.

The launch is said to begin in 2013, with a more powerful 'M' version set to follow some time after.
