THE PROTON JUMBUCK, Australia’s cheapest ute, has scored a dismal 1-Star rating after the latest round of ANCAP crash testing.

Many of us associated utes to the popular brands like Holden, Fords and the like and fail to read between the lines of what this Jumbuck has achieved. Did anyone realise that that same engine won't the Telstra Rally in its class in Perth on numerous occasions when this Magna was first built in 2003. Weight to size ratio it does more than the popular out there in the market.

Another vote for the jumbuck. My partner has one for the horse supplies. You can get three bales easy. Yes being a old lancer parts are easy to get also. Thoe have not needed any yet. I find it a very well balanced car. Very zippy. With the bigger ute they are tail happy. Believe it or not the tray is about the same size as a VY commodore. I am a car guy love car of all difference types. I think for the price it is a great buy. Only down side my girls is yellow in colour.

I've been riding the atv, and so far good.
I was lucky to get this deal because, a few days after my purchase of the proton, the deal was out. So yeah gr8 deal.
Cheers! Proton Users...

Well a mate has one to drive to work in and is very happy with it. I am considering one just to go work and on the weekends get some odd house improvement supplies from the local Bunnings and also be able to take the dogs to the park and beach. My primary reason for a Proton rather than a Falcon or Commodore is small economical engine and the tub. I can not justify buying a thirsty 6 or 8 cylinder for city use. Besides that I am secure in my masculinity so don't feel the need for a larger ute :)

W Wilkin,
i was curious about the blindspot issue because i feel in the falcon even with the QTR glass there is still a bit of a blind spot and as you said the B pillar does actually block the glass a bit.
the seat position does also influence that a bit too. where i like to sit it blocks around half.

it does look to be a very thick pillar on the proton though so im very surprised if you say it doesnt blind a bit. it may not have the cab depth of the falcon but doesnt the pillar extend over the tray a bit as well? like on the commy utes?

W Wilkin, hope it works out well for you. If only carrying small loads it is hard to beat the price.

Dont get me wrong guys I would love a Falcon Pursuit ute if I could have one, but I dont like spending over $100 dollars to go to Sydney and back. Petrol at Bathurst is likely to goto $1.65 per litre for premium so at 80 litres to fill (falcon tank) from empty thats about $130 so thats nearly catching the bus or train option. Smaller tradies are starting to use them here because they do the job of carrying cheaply.
Andrew M because the cabin is not as deep as a falcon I havent found it to be a blind spot that I have noticed (I just had to have a look myself) itis no differant to driving a sedan really and driving the falcon earlier for a test run the QTR window is partly blocked by the B pillar any way.
Watto my childen have flown the coup so its only my wife and I anyway, it was a chioce of the ute or a FJR1300 and the wife one!!!!!!!!!

Yep, just depends on your needs, eh? I have a sedan, because it's only half dozen times a year I need to use a trailer. I'm not willing to lose 3 seats when I can use a trailer.

fair comment W Wilkin,

but if you were using your vehicle for the intended purpose of it being a ute more than that you would soon find it frustrating.

im sure not even you who has one and is happy with it would recommend it to a tradesperson to satisfy their needs

i do have a question for you though out of curiosity,
how do you find the blind spot created by the fat door pillar. typically a ute would have a glass QTR panel there

Watto_cobra that is true, but how many times would the average person put a tonne in a ute and for $21500 drive away price for the top of the line with sports bar all the plastics, mats and rear cover it is a pretty good price for the proton plus its resale is higher (price comparded % wise)because I was going to buy a falcon and on the road it was going to cost me about double the price for a ute that was going to be used as a ute maybe 5% of its life. It does the job that I need it to do plus itis cheaper the run over all.

W Wilkin, I'm not sure if the XR8's capacity is lower because of different (sports) spring pack, but an average Falcon ute can take a ton.
