Aston Martin Cygnet to be a cult icon?

By Alborz Fallah |

The little Aston Marton Cygnet (which is based on the Toyota iQ) is set to become a cult icon, according to Aston Martin CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez.

Speaking to Automotive News Europe about the brand’s future, Dr Bez said that not many had faith in Aston Martin surviving as an independent manufacturer during the global financial crisis, but not only did it survive, it was also profitable and set to report profits in 2010 as well.

As for the Cygnet, it’s being built to appeal to an entirely new market looking for an exclusive city car with a badge to die for. Nonetheless, it’s also built to help Aston Martin lower its average CO2 emissions per car sold (to meet tougher regulations in Europe and USA).

Production of the reworked ultra-light city car will take place at Gaydon from early 2011. Aston Martin is set to sell around 3,000 Cygnets a year with prices starting at around 30,000 euros ($42,000 plus taxes).

So this will be the new BMW 316i? I thought you could only get one if you had a proper Aston. What a joke.

Its ugly, I don’t want one.

I can only imagine the disappointment on your friends faces (or ridicule you’d cop) when you tell them you own an ‘Aston Martin’, and then present them with this

yeah, given today’s out of this world price of living, moreso the high price of cars in Australia, they may be at one with you, smile and say at least its better than no aston at all….

If I have that money to spare, I actually dont mind one. It looks kinda cute. lol Just the perfect car for parking in city area.

I know all about aspirational consumers but this is just taking the piss now. I drive an Aston Martin…it is the Cygnet…based on a Toyota IQ.

    Cue the laughter, ridicule, insults.

I think its a good idea. Who said a luxury car had to be over 5m long with a massive, thirsty engine? It still has all of the same colours inside as normal Astons as well as the same features.

Plus the only people who are going to buy one are probably rich enough to already on an Aston but don’t want to drive it in the city. That’s fair enough IMO.
