Nissan GT-R outperforms expectations

When Nissan first released the performance figures for its new GT-R, many scoffed at the unbelievably quick times Nissan were toting – 3.5 seconds to 100km/h and an 11.6 second run down the quarter mile off the showroom floor… right.
However as journalists the world over get their hands on the new GT-R, it seems Nissan has actually been conservative with their performance figures, with auto-magazine Edmunds recording a 3.3 second sprint to 100km/h and matching the blisteringly quick 11.6 second quarter mile at 196km/h – and from only two attempts.
This puts the GT-R well into supercar territory, at less than a quarter of the price.

I dont even wish to guess at the car you are driving.
Im not going to pretend im deciding whether to get one or not. Im not going to pretend i have the money to make that decision. I dont. I think the car looks and sounds bloody great and obviously goes well too. My only gripe with the car would be 1. Weight (but apparently it doesnt feel as heavy as it is, and vspec will be lighter anyway) 2. the plasma lined cylinder bores scare me with the regular attention they require. Otherwise this is a car that will run with just about anything thats ever come out of a showroom… Good stuff Nissan!

Every claim they have made has been exceeded under journalistic use.
The personal attacks are a bit childish, and the GTR might be a sensational performer for the money, but it still looks like it was stapled together out of sheets of plywood.
Just watched the video. The 3.3 seconds is for 0-60mph (as it would be for an American publication). Nissan claims 3.5 seconds for 0-100km/h. That explains the 0.2 seconds difference.
So…”Hate GTR”… you can afford a fancy car. That makes you better than everyone else and your opinion more valid?

Don’t like the GTR? That’s ok. Say so. Don’t go on about how you don’t like it because of the people that drive them, or that the PRICE of a car is what makes it great. Drive a Porsche do you? I love them. But I love this car too, for what it represents. Fantastic, modern engineering at its best.
We all love different cars for different reasons. All cars have their charms.
Mainwaring it is only a 3km difference I do not think that makes the .2 seconds difference.

GTR = King of the tuner cars… its not that pretty looking but it has its OWN look which is a postive!!!!
getting that much performance for so little is great… you can tell that it built just for performance and speed…but thats not a bad thing…
Saying this its not mine type of car… i am more in to Muscle cars, shelbyGT500 and GT40… but saying that i can respect what this car is and what it does!!!
Its obviously really, people who bought expensive European cars now looks like complete idiots comparing their cars to the Nissan GT-R.

Chris, it would explain the difference if 0.2 is 0.16 rounded up. Note that the standing quarter is exactly in line with the claim.

Hate GTR’s comments are amazing.
But don’t mock him. Daddy’s bought him a vewy expenthive motor car – probably a Zil rather than that downmarket Volga crap – and he doesn’t like the upstart Nissan’s astounding performance figures.
This is a huge accomplishment by Nissan that is going to send all other manufacturers back to the drawing board.

Yes it might not be the most beautiful car, but for the price – the performance is incredible. It is a testament to Nissan that the car is being compared to cars much more expensive….
Assuming a 150k landing price in Aus, that would put it against the likes of Cayman, M3, RS4 (not the 911 Turbo or more it is being compared to now). They are all great cars – but can’t compete for performance against the GT-R.

Brilliant car. Phenomenal. This gives mere mortals the chance to own something very special for a third of the price. It’s not a slapped together parts bin IVF job, but more a project from the ground up. Credit where credit is due, and Nissan deserves all of it!
Bavarian Missile – The plasma lined cylinder bores are essentially an alternative to cylinder sleeves. Most new engines these days are made of an alloy for the weight but they use different material for the cylinder bores due to the nature of their job in the engine. Nissan claims it saves something like a kilogram but requires relining yearly. I want to see more development on this as i havent heard all details, i dont understand why they’d have found a kilo that important when it isnt even reciprocating mass so there must be more to it.

European cars are great, unfortunately the resale and dollar per performance dont make them worthwhile in my books if you live in australia. As for driving a Commodore.. are you a truly stupid mate? Most commodore owners (not all) would be bagging the gtr with you although they’d show a modicum more intelligence than you. I dont take your comments too seriously, you may have money or you may be full of shit? Fact is there’d be little your car could do better than the gtr! Scott, whatever more there is to it, who is going to want to strip the engine down every year? Is this the car’s achilles heel, or has somebody made this up?

I think that has come about because plasma-sprayed engines are usually reserved for cars like a Koenigsegg or similar supercar that do require yearly attention to the engine.
I have not seen anything specifically stating that the GT-R will require this level of attention.

Price for performance wise this is simply the best car to come to market in almost a decade. It’s a fabulous achievement for Nissan. All that remains to be seen is what the costs of ownership look like.

^The plasma-coated cylinder liner bores are just 0.15mm thick, compared with conventional cast iron liners of 2.6mm. They are better at dissipating heat, improving efficiency and they’re lighter, saving about 3 kg in a V6 engine. To ensure sufficient lubrication of the sprayed-on cylinder liner in the aluminium block, special synthetic engine oil is used: Mobil-1 RP OW-40. Would be an expensive recall if Nissan have got it wrong!!
Also a comment on a post from hategtr (subsequently removed)regarding fuel economy. I think hategtr stated 8.2liters per100klms. I believe this was a misquote and should have been 8.2klms per litre which equates to a slightly more realistic figure of 12.2ltrs/100klms as claimed by Nissan.

Our block had chrome molly sleeves because it was supercharged so maybe its also a strength plus?
Either way I bet there not cheap to replace!
Still I guess the original owners can afford them its the ones in 10 years that want one will find it an expensive replacement!

Actually CaptainMainwaring, talking about 0-100 km times. Taking into the 3.5km/h difference, 60 mi/h = 96.5 km/h, to cover this would take the GTR an extra 0.1 seconds. Ie. 3.4s Assuming average linear acceleration for simplification.
Also, if you actually watched the video review, the reviewer comments that they could “shave another tenth or two” off that time if they were on a better surface than the airstrip. Which would bring 0-100 km/h up in 3.2s.
A phenomenal ripsnorter car at a sensational price. Stunning footage and yes it would be quicker on a different surface.

down…….like you should expect it of years of real thrashing } I guess this is why I’m such a BMW lover after 20 years………I thrash the date out of my cars always have……..BMW have meet my demands! Thats why Ive stayed true to them…….I don’t know how many compression lock ups I have done in them or snatched them in second!They have remained brilliant!
New eyebrow 5 series look great I think……second hand is ALWAYS A GOOD ALTERNATIVE.! I mean my almost 10 year old M3 is .2 of a second slower than the E46 version! 236 kws or 250kws……….not a big difference especially if you can launch well!5.5 -100 or 5.2-100 you know what I am saying!
