Mazdaspeed Mazda2 (MPS)

December 29, 2007 by Alborz Fallah

Despite rumours that Mazda Australia is starting to lose a little bit of interest in its MPS range, hotted up Mazdas seem to be endless. This is the Mazdaspeed Mazda Demio, or as we know it, the Mazda2.

Mazdaspeed Mazda2 (MPS)

So far very little is known except that it looks sensational. With a complete body kit including bumpers, spoilers, skirts, etc., the Mazda2 MPS also receives custom wheels, brakes, and lowered suspension.

Mazda has been very secretive above the engine, but it is more than likely that something has been changed, whether it’s a small turbo or a better tune, it would be unlike Mazdaspeed to release a car without engine modifications.

The interior is helped along with two-tone racing seats and trim upgrades to give it a sporty look. From the pictures we can see the car is an automatic, which is usually not a good sign, but that’s not to say if/when it goes into production, it won’t be available in manual.

Looks good for stock, almost like aftermarket.

  2. Duck says:

Looks great……….id like to know power output!

  3. MatthewM says:

Now all they need to do is slap a rotary in it >:)

  4. fordman6 says:

I like the way you think MattM! >:)

  5. Duck says:

    FordMan6,
Id thought that ford people would also like mazda’s

  6. MatthewM says:

This link is what spurned the rotary comment, watch the vid:

  7. No Name says:

Looks like a dressed up boy racer car straight from the factory.

  8. tony says:

Now this a Mazda I would buy Nick!

  9. Dave says:

I have a green Genki on order with late Jan 2008 delivery but that looks hot…

  10. Maciek says:

Would a FWD rotary set up be possible?

  11. Steve says:

Why not. Rotary engine is lighter and smaller. More room for the front drive train.

I still can’t get past the new, high quality dashboard though. By that, I mean the ultra low quality dash. Seeing as you spend most of your life inside a car, I always hold the quality and feel of a dashboard in high regard.

The old Mazda 2’s dash was great. Solid, looked good. The buttons were all well made and felt nice to touch and press. I test drove the new 2 and I made that face babies make that try Lemon for the first time.

I think the new 2 is a let down to Mazda compared with the last model.

  12. TP says:

ROFL look at that tacky rear diffuser. Looks like aftermarket modding… GONE WRONG.

  13. Mitchell says:

This is just a normal Mazda 2 (demio in japan) with MazdaSpeed rice accessories.. I don’t know why everyone keeps claiming its some sort of performance version.

  14. Oz. says:

Paul, what the ***k do you like? You cant just love toyota.

  15. ImportJap says:

Small, sporty car with a bit of kick hopefully, just what I need around busy Adelaide city. In a time of high fuel prices we need little cars like this that give performance and economy and don’t look too bad either. Having your cake and eating it too.

Not a fan of the mini diffuser, but looks pretty good.

  16. Myke says:

“Looks like aftermarket modding… GONE WRONG.”

Oh please TP, if this were a TRD Yaris, you’d say it was a work of art.

  17. TP is like most on here who obsessed about Toyota and pretend to like other cars. Great to see a change of design ethics and not stick at same same and have the balls to do it; and MYKE you are spot on about TOSSER PAUL. FANCY HIS DRIVEL being pulled up when he got banned as being meaningless = like true form same same!

  18. Oz. says:

If I came to Paul’s house in that car and put a TRD Badge on it, he WILL KISS IT! Mazda however – Ugly!

  19. TP says:

Ok guys coming from the biased Ford camp.

You people are a joke… you attack the TRD as tacky… yet this thing, look at that rear diffuser, the TACKIEST I have ever seen…. looks like its been glued on and then room for the exhaust cut out! And I wont get started on those rims, look like 12s and the design takes me back to the mid 90s.

I have bias for Toyota, but when I comment on other cars I do so with no bias. The regular Mazd2 is alrite looking… this tacky piece of junk is not good looking.

  20. Tonyn says:

    is TP toyota paul?

  21. Andrew M says:

    you guessed it tonyn.

people we must excuse paul for liking cars with out bodylines. he also likes his toast without butter.

this actually looks great. and i am not a rice burner fan.
any idea what these are worth in comparison to other makes?

  22. TP says:

I Have no clue how you can say this looks great… and not be a ricer. I will show it to some friends and see what they think. The front looks alrite… because its prity much the Mazda2. The rear is HIDEOUS no matter how you look at it, which is why I am annoyed because people claimed the TRD had tacked on bits, this rear disffuser looks like a backyard job gone wrong.

  23. Oz. says:

But if it had TRD on it, you’ll love it!

  24. Watto_Cobra says:

Rear diffuser does look like an aftermarket add-on.

I like the brake ducts and love the crease in the doors, it’s line meets up with the join of the rear bumper and quarter panel.

For a sporty small car, it looks great to me.

  25. jbot says:

Looks good, but it would be great without the rear diffuser.

  26. Andrew M says:

    well easy paul,
it means i can appreciate things that may not be my taste but can atleast acknowledge them.
im not a holden fan but i can at least acknowledge some of their good design aspects for eg.

i do agree the rear diffuser does look tacky but im sure its nothing 30secs with a phillips head screwdriver wouldnt fix.

also i thought the rear of the TRD looked good but the front tacky.
same applies to you….how can you say the TRD wasnt a tad tacky looking, yet this one is heavily tacky for your liking?

  27. I can see TP’s and JBot’s comment easy…but as front of car is the in your face look and selling point of the car (and what most people remember) the rear diffuser in my opinion is irrelevant even though different – so TP it is a very weak lame drawing of the straw there with TRD Aurion!

The Yaris in my opinion is better then this as Mazda 2 is too curvy on rear lights which are upswept too radically on bottoms and look odd. Mazda 2 is more racier look, but the Yaris is more overall better looking as more symmetry and style to design. Liked Yaris from first viewing in Car mag!

  28. TP says:

Its good you see my point re rear diffuser, I can appreciate that, but still imo that makes the car more tacky then a TRD OVERALL (To put it in simple terms, on the tackiness scale the TRDs front is 7/10 the rear is 4/10 compared to the Mazda at 9/10 for rear and 4/10 for front… overall more tackier).

  29. Bavarian Missile says:

But the rear diffuser has a use doesn’t it……remove it and wont it affect the handling? If anything it needs bigger wheel to fill those guards! Over all I think it looks real hot !

  30. Oz. says:

Spoilers and that diffuser are useless on road cars. Unless you doing 200KM/H

The Diffuser is more for show, I doubt it would improve anything when racing at high speeds.

  31. Andrew M says:

thats the key word BM……..”overall” looks and the mazda “overall” does look quite impressive.

i also wouldnt be surprised if the new mazda 2 styling is a tiny insight to what to expect from the new “Ka” we have seen spy shots of

    TP,
i still cant see how a rear diffuser that makes up prob one tenth of the rear styling drags down the rear styling overall by 9 tenths

  32. Bavarian Missile says:

True AndrewM………………its like that dude the other day that said Falcons don’t sell well cause of the center console……..

Hey Oz……….you would be surprised how well they work at speeds as low as 90 klm……..really..it has a purpose!

The higher their placed the better they work! Also helps with fuel economy but lets not get into that………

  33. Andrew M says:

ha ha yeah centre console ha ha ha
yeah ive heard it all now

  34. Isidoros says:

    Hello,

very nice job. I want to buy Mazda 2. Can you tell me about the boby kit? How i can find this?

    Thank you…
